I'm assuming you're referring to playing in a Mentor Vs Midshipman game with a computer as Mentor. You might want to try one with a human Mentor. Their purpose is to give guidance on how to defeat them.
It's also more fun if the other Midshipmen are actively working to coordinate with each other. Sometimes it happens and sometimes they're not talkative at all. Luck of the draw really.
Here's an MvM game with a human Mentor and might have a good group of Midshipmen as they put out a request for more to join in: http://play.planets.nu/#/sector/258465
One other thing that isn't really obvious in an MvM game is that there are often experienced players following along. You can ask questions inside the game in the public message feed and get very good answers that are game specific. That can be invaluable when trying to learn the basics. Of course the human Mentor as well can answer questions. It's one of the best ways to improve.
The other thing I'd recommend when starting out is to play a good race. Some are better than others in the beginning. The Cyborg and Crystals for example are more complicated to play. At least to play well.
I'd suggest playing the Colonies. They're quite powerful while being more forgiving if you make a few mistakes here or there. Their Cobols generate a lot of fuel so that makes logistics much simpler, and their ability to fighter minesweep makes enemy minefields evaporate easily. Their heavy carrier, the Virgo, is probably the third best ship in the game for taking out starbases through combat, and is not that expensive to build. I believe the MvM game I mentioned has an opening available for a Colonies player. |
