| Beams are primarily for minesweeping.
Some places, beams are called primary weapons, but thats misleading.
In battles between ships, torpedo tech is far more important.
I will probably meet you with an x-ray/disruptor mk4 LCC.
If you meet me with with a Hdis, mk3 quietus, you loose 100% of the time.
If you go to vcr, battlesimulation, and test the battle, you will see that in most battles, you ship will die before it even gets to fire its beams.
To beat a mk4 LCC, you will actually need 2 torpedo ships.
2 mk7 fireclouds would do.
Of course, an annihilation class battleship will do the trick,
but it very very expensive...
