Guys,

I'm joining for team 2 and am checking on my two proposed team mates to get them to join. Hopefully this can be confirmed over the weekend. If they can't make this game I may pull back out to allow others to take the spot I am hoping we can fill the full team.. TBC.

Greetings all!

Ah Halion, you may be new to the Borgs, your reputation states you can play any race. I am sure your teammates will help since you are in so many games together.  Also, the game hasn't even started and I have already discovered your spy on my homeworld...  For shame  ;-)

Hehe I think I have a while to go before I could tackle the Borg in this type of environment!

Best leave it to those who have the experience!

Should be good game judging from the line ups.

Just one more player and we're good to go.

P.S. Definately need to improve my graphics and avatar skills by the way this thread is going ;)

Ups, i thought i had send the spy to Lizzys Homeworld. It may got confused with two Lizard players in here. I am really sorry for that misstake, just let me know the planet ID were I can pick it up.....

btw, would you mind if I try my best to assimilate your race? ;-)

Doese anybody know if this Lizard-Robot kit works for Borg assimilation as well? I could use some parts at least....

“Resistance is futile”, the lizard spy tried to repeat.

“No,no,no.Less thinking.Don’t forget, they can’t think for themselves. They only have one brain to share for all the Borg. Cross a valley girl with a cactus and then you have the thinking pattern of a Borg. Now walk over there and say it again.”

The lizard spy started across the room to repeat his phrase.

“Stop! You are NOT a Lizard. You can’t move with agility and power.Think Zombie! You are brain dead and your limbs are not yours”

The instructor slapped his tail against his forehead, and then lowered his head into his claws.“ We have to infiltrate the enemy Borg. It’s really hard to dumb down a lizard to Borg level!”

I think we may bring fashion to the Borg world!

Robo-lizard uses a single motor and gearbox system to mimic walking motion.
A sound, like clapping hands, starts the movement
and its LED eyes light...

(and then he plays his turn.)

It looks like the admins aren't reading their mail. The longer we continue to play the harder it will be for team 1 being a player down.

Any suggestions other than a mass resignation and starting again?

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply

It is still easily recoverable given how early the game is but you are right the longer we leave it the worse it gets.

Personally i would prefer not to need to take such drastic action as a resign/restart.

Jamie&Jack are you working to find a replacement yourselves with someone in mind or hoping for a willing volunteer?

Seems the people posting are alll on other teams.. have you got a grand master plan..? ;) let us know as some people may be put of joining you as they are unsure if the team themselves have a plan to replace and don't want to gatecrash..

I have written the admin again.  Hopefully they will understand that even though a player dropping is not unusual, a team game is unique and it is in the best interest of all to have a full compliment of all teams for the challenge.  We are not all in this game for points, we are in this game to play the best of the team commanders out there and enjoy destroying or getting our butt kicked... (hopefully more of the former for me ;-)  )

Team #1, can you pipe in?

It seems I am the lst for the turn, I will wait a few more hours and then necessity demands I turn it in.  God's speed and good gaming!

Changes to VGAP.nu from TimHost:

This is just a reminder about the small change b/t VGAP.nu and TimHost in case anyone didn't know:

gsX (Give Ship) and miX (Minefield Identity) use player number instead of Race number. They are the same in regular games. However, those commands were set up to use player numbers so they would work in special games.

Example: To lay a minefield in my identity (Player 8, mjs68508), you would use the fcode "mi8."

To give me a ship, you would use the fcode "gs8."

To give Player 1, jamie, a ship you would use fcode = "gs1."

To give Player 12, crackpot, a ship you would use fcode = gsC."

To lay minefields in their names would be "mi1" and miC," respectively.

Mike

(Also, rumor has it that if you always lay all your minefields useing fcode "mi8," (in this game) not only will you have happy dreams, a guaranteed raise at work, and the adoration of women worldwide, but the light will always be green at the intersection.)

Ratingen,

What you did wrong was you forgot to run your MCBR's through the minefield uncloaked and at warp 4.

This will ensure maximum benefit as per Mjs's instructions.

My advice would be to follow his appoach for all ships and all journeys just to be safe.

“We are surround by webs Captain Shovelhead.” Said the one eyed, tin-headed evil Borg.

“Then I guess we have stayed past our welcome.  Prepare the chunnel.  I will check with Captain Panhead and see if he is ready to receive us.”

Using the powerful communication method of the collective, the Borg Captain decided to first check on the events of another Captain rumored to be in trouble.  It was mentioned that this other Captain was with an entire fleet, even capital carriers, which were in the midst of web mines.  This of course this was all a decoy and part of their devious master plan.  They would lure the enemy into believing they were in trouble and dealing with pirates, Birds and Rebels; then the Borg, lizards and Colonies would strike hard destroying all in their path.  There is nothing more powerful then the secret weapon of the chunnel !!!

What?  No answer.  Awe there it is. It seems the allied Firecloud had gone off course. Not a problem.  Shovelhead knew he could just chunnel in ships, and the allied commander will just need to chunnel out.  All would go well and this alliance will see the enemy knell before them !!!!

“Set the chunnel in 3-2-…… What’s that approaching?!?!?!?  Call the allied firecloud up, we need to change chunnel trajectories.  It’s a cube ship!!!!  What’s that on the scene?  Our allied Firecloud also has an enemy ship hovering over them. ?!?”

All Shovelhead saw was an explosion on the screen and fire braking out in his command center.

   “Chunnel! Chunnel ! Chunnel!”

The only thing heard now was the guttural laughter of little dragon whelps.  “SSShall we ssscoop up the dead for dinner”

“Naw, they are borg and taste nasty.  But I believe we can piece some together and have mighty good toilet scrubbers. I guess resistance is not quite that futile.”

As Captain Rodriguez entered the transporter and noticed he was alone, he took the opportunity to take a deep smell of his drink.

"Ahhh, that smells good!"

He called it the Velvet Hammer:
3 shots of expresso
2 shots of caramel syrup
2 packets of Space Splenda
and topped up with the strongest coffee in the forward galley

Sometimes, he would add a cone of whip cream. But, since he was on his way to the bridge and had a spill proof lid on his cup, he forego'ed (forwent?) that pleasure.

"Captain on the bridge!" shouted one of his officers as the transporter door opened.

"At ease," he immediately replied as he surveyed the bridge of the captured Virgo. It was certainly not up to the standards of a ship like the biocide he had served on. However, it was his first command and it would always hold a special place in his heart. With the Empire at a disadvantage, every ship available was being pressed into service.

As he was about to sit down, he studied the Captain's chair and mused to himself, "Hmmm, now where would the Colonials hide the cup holder on their Captain's chair?"

Try as he might, the answer eluded him. "Helmsman, how do you release the cup holders on the chairs on the bridge?"

In a quiet voice the Helmsman answered, "Uh, Captain, as far as we can tell, this ship has no cup holders."

"WHAT !?!?"

"No cup holders? No wonder the crew surrendered! Every good officer knows that a caffeinated crew is an effective crew!"

He slammed the communicator button so hard he spilled a couple drops of his brew onto his leg. He didn't even noticed as he raged, "Bridge to Engineering!"

"Engineering, here, Captain."

"There are no cup holders on this ship!"

"Aye, Captain."

"I want every man you have put on retrofitting crews and I want cup holders at every battle station and officer station! And, I want it done in within 24 hours!"

"But, Captain, engines have only been repaired to 60% and life support systems have not been fully repaired."

"That wasn't a request, Engineering! Drop those unessential repairs and get those cup holders in place with in 24 hours!"

The Captain plopped into his chair and took another whiff of his brew.

Quietly, he said to himself, "The enemy is amazing. Even a plebe at the Academy knows on day one that to build an effective fighting ship, you start with the cup holders and build the rest of the ship around it."

Request to put game on hold -  I have serious Cargo Bugs here. Dozens of them.
I think we need to do the turn again..

What? You still have minerals? I wish we had your planets! Seriously, I am not a fan for re-doing a turn, unless extreme circumstances, but if there is a significant bug then I could agree to Hold the game til fixed. What exactly is a Cargo Bug? Any more that you could say so that we could look to see if we are experiencing it too? I have not noticed anything so far. But yet if it is occurring to you so much, it must be affecting everyone.

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply

yes of course i have minerals.. you should as well in the azores cluster, don't you ;)

The Bug: Cargo transfers during connectivity loss (says disconnected when low bandwidth from wifi) are lost in the nirvana, especially when beaming from planets to ships. sometimes, when beaming down to planets the cargo is doubled. happened here once with cash and was also reported from other games. the beam up bug happened a few times with cargo and supplies in the alcatraz game, and here sometimes as well, but this turn it is really bad. i have lost cargo on several ships, including crucial cargo like 250 torpedoes and all fuel from a planet - that in places where they can't be replaced... Browser is FF8.

hmmm. Sounds like an issue, but more isolared individual issue and not worth holding game. In meantime, definitely recommend you check orders you give. I try to do that after I use my iPad doing my turns.

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply

very funny.. guess how i found out.

i think the fastest way to go on playing is to reset the turn and hope that this time only one or two random ships jettison their cargo for whatever reason. i have no prob with forgotten orders like it happened before some bugfixes, but if i loose thousands of minerals, megacredits, supplies and a couple of hundred torps each turn, you can as well tell me to go on playing without ships.

the feedback system shows that this is not an individual issue, i wasnt the first to report it. the most individual thing imagineable is the browser technology, but firefox is the everything but a rare weirdo freaky browser app. it's the second most used browser worldwide..

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply
I do use Chrome, but firefox is completely supported as well. The issue is a very obscure bug which happens when the internet drops right in the middle of a save (sometimes). Its very tough to reproduce and doesn't occur very often so it's been difficult to fix. Everytime we receive a report like this we know its not gone yet and make a few small code changes (or large code changes) and then hope we never hear about it again. So far without success.

I've frozen the game, but we need to write a function to reset the turn properly and safely in mid game. We're going to try to get that ready tomorrow morning.

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply
If we put this game on Hold then we should put all Nu games on Hold -- no reason to single this game out.  Agree?  Any reason to single this game out?

In the meantime, I use Firefox and have not had this issue yet -- but will keep my eye out because it sounds like I might.  If I do, I will probably go to Chrome like Mike suggests, or another browser until the bug is fixed. Sounds like you should switch out of FF until this bug is fixed since it happened to you multiple times already.  Agree that losing torps each turn is not even worth playing.  Apparently you are occasionally in a spot where wireless is not reliably strong enough.

Would not want to do turn over -- combat could turn out different and don't want to lose a Biocide due to a do-over. Sorry Lizzy -- losing torps is bad and unfortunate.  But your team has both done lots of damage to others and lost much more to us so far in our webs (last turns alone losing two Virgos and several hundred fighters).

Also -- I did not get an email but apparently this game was already put on Hold -- was just this game put on Hold and not others?  What's up with that?  Only one player wrote they wanted to Hold this game - and one player wrote they did not want to Hold (1 Yes and 1 No - not exactly a unanimous vote).  And again -- if it were to be put on Hold, then no reason to just Hold this game and not all Nu games if there truly is a dangerous bug issue.  Why is the Championship game and other Team games not being put on Hold too?

Joshua -- why was this game put on Hold?  Next turn will not be due tomorrow?

Edit - o.k. thanks Joshua, sounds like we will be back in business again tomorrow.  Good luck!

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply

yes it were great if we could reset to the rst file (so to say),
maybe even individually so that others don't have to do their
turns again.

maybe it helps: what happened here was: i had several disconnect
signs when playing, but my wifi said it was online, sometimes with a
weak signal..  before saving to 'not ready' i took the notebook to my
router to avoid any signal losses, because otherwise the "can't save"
error message comes..  sorry if i caused strange things by doing that.

and thanks a lot for your help!

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply
In VGAP.Tim, there were separate rst files for each player. Does it work the same for VGAP.nu? Or, is there just one giant .rst file?

If there are .rst files for each player, perhaps there can be a "reset" button that each player can use to have the back up copy overwrite the current copy of the turn for that player so the player can redo his individual turn.

If there is one giant .rst file, then it would be a major rewrite, though worthwhile, to separate the .rst files.

In any event, some ruling for the future needs to be made. It seems that each of us is responsible for our own internet connection. It can easily take 6 hours to do a turn for a large empire, especially borg.

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply
Greetings Fornax players;

Like Thin Lizzy, I also have multiple wifi issues and lost internet connectivity.  Many times.  It was a pain because I knew I was in a team game and had to go back in on many occasions to double check and make sure my turns orders were as I wanted and expected by my fellow team members.  Also, because I do this game on many computers, I also have several browsers I use.  I assumed this was an issue on my side, therefore I REALLY double and triple checked my orders.  Several hours were lost, but that is the price I pay when I play a team game.
On the other side of the coin, I have finished the ships in my current turn.  This took several hours to complete as well.  Now I will need to go back in and re-do them again, and may yet again..  and so on.
This game is not perfect, I do not want to play in a team game if another team has a disadvantage.  Yet, it seems we all had this disadvantage not just one  player.  I would say... use Chrome, but the same thing happened to me.  So my suggestion is........  if there is a problem, double check everything.  Yes, it's a pain, but if not for yourself, at least for your team mates.

Joshua, I would not have minded a do-over if everyone agreed with it and it was at the start, but now this late in the turn, I am surprised by this.  In the future, please let the players know of this and not just one player dictate re-do's because everything is not as they wish.

With that said, I understand there may be many issues not revealed I am not privy too. In that case, I bow to the judgement to others who know more about the subject matter at hand.  I actually trust the judgement of all the VGAP.NU staff and even the players in this game.  If something must be done and it is stated as such, oh well, I will adjust and move forward.  BUT, please in the future, fill us in on something BEFORE I waste time on turns and turns are redone because of one players complaints.  As I mentioned, I already wasted many hours making sure my turn was correct after the interconnectivity issues.

  God's speed and good gaming!

things look very good here.. i would say "go"

thanks joshua.. that was really fast !!!

maybe, if the technology exists now, there could be a hidden reset button in the
game (color) settings,  so that people can reset their turn by themselves if they
need or want to? i think i read some suggestions regarding this earlier this year..

Although I agree with the reasons why the game was put on hold.

Captain Benning smiled as the Helmsman announced, "Approaching orbital vector, Captain."

"Enter orbit, Helmsman."

"Aye, Sir"

It was nice to finally reach the destination and complete another mission.

"Tell the storage crews to prepare to offload supplies."

"Aye, Captain."

"Tell the Bursar to prepare a larger bundle of intergalactic cash and trading certificates."

"Aye, Captain."

"Tell the Colonists they have arrived at their new home and prepare for settlement."

"Uhh, Captain, we don't have any Colonists aboard."

"What!"

"You had them disembark when you were rearranging supplies. And they were never told to reembark."

Captain Benning sighed and hung his head in frustration as he thought to himself, "No wonder this trip was so quiet."

"Reverse course to our original embarkation point, Helmsman."

"Aye, Captain."

I vote no for the frequency change.

I am really, really enjoying this game. It is brutal and every mistake I make is paid for dearly. I see this game lasting at least another year at the current pace. To slow down the pace would make the game last too long.

I am looking forward to my next team game, a game with only 2 teams (5 vs 5 or 6 vs 6) and a wait of 12-18 months is a long enough wait. Decreasing the turn frequency would make it seem like forever.

Like many here, I find this game fascinating on several levels.  I know the demise of team one was quick, but the crafty commanders of team #2 and #4 are keeping me on pins and needles.  I have even purposely not joined other games just so I will not diminish the anticipation of new tricks they may launch my way.
Alas, knowing that these commanders will not give up and that my team will fight to the death, this game may take some time.  With that knowledge and the ever increasing desire to venture forth into new worlds when this one is done, I have to vote NOT to slow down the pace of the game, and therefore the ending of the game.

Hope you enjoyed the holiday mode ;-). As our team told you last week already we want to end this game now. You want to win vs active players and not fight the holiday mode, right? I guess you did not saw much difference the the game play the last week, guess why. ;)
So accept our defeat or play on your own, anyway I will drop after the next host run.
Halion is on holiday this week, i was last, and Lizzy has some RL issues that he need to give more priority.
Thanks for the game, it was the best game at NU i played so far. I am looking for a rematch some day

Understood.

Yes it was lots of fun and very challenging.  We look forward to a next time, whether it be on the same or opposite sides.

As mentioned earlier, with no "Concede" button yet, we will finish it out to the official 300 planets playing it out on our own, but at least the turns won't take so long anymore, always looking over our shoulder...

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply

... the 'concede button' is in the lower right and called 'contact us' :D

but if you would like to go on playing vs. comatious players, feel free to do so...
team 4 has not been answering for a long time now, the robot has bailed,
ratingen is playing very small turns, and musso is bravely trying to defend
the flag vs an army that is nearly as big as the one you are throwing at us.

i personally accept a defeat, also because i know, what 'only' 85 planets
short mean - to get these we would need to play another 40-50 turns at least,
especially if team 4 implodes and our forces can be used to defend our
space - or rather for a surprise punch like we did with team 4.

but to invest another minimum 50 evenings at least is simply too much
before the background of really large turns in my championship game
and a more time consuming real life.
i simply can't move 100 ships and 100 planets 5 times a week anymore.

as you might have noticed (not only) i have stopped playing for a score
qualification a few months ago, so resigning instead of ending the game
is a serious option for me. also i have no problem with accepting a defeat
since in my opinion it is a diplomatic one after defeating two teams ourselves
while fighting on the retreat vs the third.

but lost is lost anyway - this is why i will contact joshua and ask him to end the
game and give you the necessary victory points you are looking for

thanks for the best game i have played here on nu so far, and i am sure we
will meet again on the star map

Thin lizzy, you have been thrashed. You have been defeated from about turn 20. And, you don't even seem to understand why you lost.

Your tactics have been excellent. You are one of the best tacticians in the game. And, Halion and Spacesquad are not far behind you. However, in the other 3 important areas of the game, you have been soundly defeated and need to improve your play in these areas.

1. Strategy and Diplomacy - You lost the game around turn 15-20 when you took the Privateer's home world. While a masterful, tactical victory, we won the game on that turn.

You say:"also i have no problem with accepting a defeat since in my opinion it is a diplomatic one after defeating two teams ourselves while fighting on the retreat vs the third."

In reality, you are saying, "Our strategy was to attack all of the other 3 teams."

This was a losing strategy. By taking the Privateer home world, you:

1. Sealed team 1's enmity against you. You were doomed to fight against the rest of team 1.
2. Sealed team 4's determination against you. You were doomed to fight against them for team 1's area and them the rest of the game.
3. Let us know we could use some of our resources building up our economy, since we wouldn't be facing your full power.

Pearl Harbor was a great tactical victory for the Japanese and the Axis powers. But, Churchill rejoiced because he knew that Allied victory was assured that day.

Likewise, taking the Privateer's home world was a great tactical victory for team 2. However, we at team 3 celebrated that turn, as we knew then that our victory was now assured.

Strategy/Diplomacy is just as important as tactics and we have soundly defeated you in this area.

2. Economics - The Borg has an advantage in economics. This was my second borg game and spacesquad's first. They say the most improvement is made between the first and second game. I am sure spacesquad will have a much better economy in the second game. However, in this game, our economy is vastly superior to yours. The only thing slowing us is the attrition of our Biocides by your star bases.

You say:"and musso is bravely trying to defend the flag vs an army that is nearly as big as the one you are throwing at us."

Say what? We have 287 warships and you have 106. That is almost a 3-1 advantage.

Napoleon was the first major general to bring his supplies with him and not live off the land so he would have much more flexibility with his troops.

The supply trail IS part of the attacking army. A forward supply base with 50,000 MC, and 3,000 of each mineral makes 3 biocides fight like 6 and 6 mine layers fight like 12. And, we have many forward supply bases, as well as more large carriers and mine layers.

Your borg only has 13 warships left (your team's fireclouds)? We have more than double that number of fireclouds and we are still severly stretched.

The economy is just as important as tactics and we have soundly defeated you in this area.

3. Teamwork - This is a team game, not a diplomatic planets with max 2 allies game, like you seem to be playing. You say:

"I personally accept a defeat."

Thin lizzy is not one of the players in this game. Neither is spacesquad, halion, dragondejhi, bondservant, mjs68508, etc. The only 4 players in this game are teams 1-4.The fact is, we, team 3, have vastly outplayed you, team 2, in teamwork.

In a football team, (American football (grin)), each player has a specific job every single play. The better this division of labor is carried out, the better the team succeeds. You say:

"i simply can't move 100 ships and 100 planets 5 times a week anymore."

You shouldn't have 100 planets. It is the borg's job to run the economy. Teamwork means division of labor. It not only means less work, but more efficient work because the brain has fewer overall complications to worry about.

1. Why do you have more starbases than the borg or colonies when you cannot build large carriers?
2. Why is the colonies fighting at all when you get 150% damage and he doesn't?
3. . .20. There are many other areas where you seem to be playing as allies instead of as a team.

Teamwork is just as important as tactics and we have soundly defeated you in this area.

4. Tactics - Even in this area it has been a draw. We have been steadily advancing. Only your star bases have slowed us down. You say:

"to get these we would need to play another 40-50 turns at least, especially if team 4 implodes and our forces can be used to defend our space - or rather for a surprise punch like we did with team 4."

I agree it will be 40-50 turns before we get 300 planets. But the fact is you would end up in 3rd place (2nd place loser). Team 4 will not collapse. Our bulge will eventually stretch all the way across and separate you from team 4. Team 4 members who stick it out will be able to defend their quadrant from any remnants of your army down there. They will end up in second place. Team 2 will end up in 3rd place.

Our tactics will make sure we will not only win, but that you don't even come in second place.

So,

1. Tactics - draw
2. Strategy/Diplomacy - team 3 soundly defeats team 2
3. Economics - team 3 soundly defeats team 2
4. Teamwork - team 3 soundly defeats team 2

So, it looks like team 3 defeats team 2 by a score of 3.5 to 0.5. That explains why the results on the battlefield are so lop-sided. Before you can get better, you need to understand why you lost. And, you lost not only to team 3, but you also lost to team 4.

Take care,

Mike

It is one of the hardest things to do -- to play as one team rather than a close-knit group of allies. For a variety of reasons.

Team Games are my favorite, so I look from time to time at the Scoreboards of other Team Games. And I often find clear evidence that nearly all teams in a Nu team game are playing as allies, not as a team. Some Nu teams may operate as one team - but it appears to be rare.

My brothers and I have had practice over the past 30+ years to play as one team together, even creating Teams that have dominated previous online games that no longer exist. It's a lot of fun. And it is our hope that we can encourage many Nu players to try out the Team Game format. And to try to play as one team - not just as Full Allies working very closely together and communicating frequently. We are confident that for those players that try to do this, they may experience something special and memorable.

thanks for the analysis, mike - i really appreciate reading other points of view.
to some i agree, like the team coordination in the last months... and to be honest
even the whole gameplay.
the idea that team 4 can reach the second place however or that you can rescue
them is on the other hand an assumption - you will see once the turns are open. ;)

if this is an issue, and i guess it would be for me:
there could be an easier way to do some score cosmetics for you, mike,
instead of playing 50 turns: since dragon and bond have qualified for and
taken a seat in the second championship game, they both don't need any
scores anymore. these games are an all or nothing situation which erases
all score records before - either you loose everything or you get the title...

which again means that there is no use for the fornax scores for them..
why don't you ask your fellow players to give you the big carriers?
then you have a high score jump and reach military and planet count #1
and can use that for your own qualification ...

anyhow i have learned many important lessons in this game and have
successfully applied them to scorpius - and of course i would like to
keep fornax for my records, just to be reminded about it - it has been
the most challenging game so far - that's why i ask to officially end it

unfortunately i can't -like i said- go on playing since weeks now and will
resign tonight if you wish to go on on your own.

thanks for playing

Mike, you really surprised me with your “findings” better let Bond do the figure analysis and concentrate on your excellent Economic game play. :P

The reason why we lost is simple: webmines! But if you never played against a good crystal you will not believe those “web tales” until you find your Fleet empty and captured.

What should I say, some of us had to learn it the hard way. hehe :-)

I am not sure how you came to 3.5 to 0.5, actually its 1.3 to 1. We ruled the cluster, but we failed to find a strategies against your webs. And on our run to have 300 we scored second. That’s ok for me.

The figures are:

                                Planets                Starbases            Warships

Team 2                1.3 (173)             1.1 (141)              2.7 (106)

Team 3                 1     (227)              1     (164)              1 (287)

Team 4                 2,4 (92)                2.2 (72)                10.2 (28)

Are not these boards not a forum for the webs our words weave?  Do we all not benefit or become misinformed by the tiniest of spectral strands?

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply
spacesquad,

1. I agree with you about crystals 100%. They are the race I fear most. That is another reason I like Borg - 10 Heavy Phaser Biocides and the ability to chunnel out of trouble. Frankly, I don't understand why crystals don't win at least half of all games, especially with the current Max Allies = 1 format. If they have a good player with large carriers next to them that will ally with them, it should be automatic victory (web mines should capture the cloakers needed).

2. The final result will be about (regardless of your efforts):

1st place - Team 3 = 325 planets
2nd place - Team 4 = 100 planets
3rd place - Team 2 = 75 planets
4th place - Team 1 = 0 planets

(Bases and ships don't matter - they are only tools to get and hold planets).

3. I will stick with the 3.5 - 0.5 (I was talking about the 4 major parts of play). Remember, we are playing a 4-player game, not a 12-player game. The rule on 4-player games is well known and absolute: The player who gets ahead first is the target of the other 3 and will almost surely lose. This is true whether you are playing Eurogames, like Settlers of Catan, Powergrid, etc, or Wargames like Diplomacy, Risk, etc. The winning strategy of a 4to7-player game is to keep close to the leader, but NEVER, NEVER, EVER get in first until you are unstoppable.

When you took the Privateer home world, you marked yourselves as the leader that the other 3 players had to stop. How many you eliminated is immaterial, you were doomed. Even if you had chosen Crystal instead of Colonies or we had chosen Colonies instead of Crystals, you were still doomed. 1 against 3 is a losing strategy. There is absolutely no way you could have conquered team 1, then team 4, then team 3. Having the Crystals increased the pace of our victory, not the inevitability.

When you took the Privateer home world, we now had overwhelming forces.

1. We had 95% of our forces fighting you.
2. Team 1 had all their forces fighting you (our benefit).
3. Team 4 had 95% their forces fighting you (our benefit).
4. Team 2 had 2/3? of their forces fighting Team 4 (our benefit).
5. Team 2 had 1/3? of their forces fighting Team 3 (your benefit).
6. Teams 3 and 4 each had 5% of their forces guarding their mutual border.

In aggregate, 90% of the forces in the galaxy are working for us and 10% of the forces in the galaxy were working for you. There is absolutely no way for team 2, with 10% of the forces working for them, to defeat team 3, with 90% of the forces working for them.

To win, you had to ally with team 1, helping them if necessary, and the 2 of you head south. Another possibility would have been to ally with team 4 in a diagonal alliance and let them grow faster than you while you whittle us (team 3) down.

I have my money on you in the Scorpius championship game - don't let me down!

Hi Guys,

I see Ratigen has already agreed to drop this game on our behalf. I will drop out this turn. As you could probably already tell we pretty much stopped playing, even as an alliance, about 10-20 turns ago to the point that we had already stopped communicating amongst ourselves.

Your discussion on the difference between an alliance and a team is interesting and I think it is something we learned. Certainly our team was weakened early on with my poor understanding of the Rebel economy more Falcons and Freighters, early on was needed. I also struggled with the alternatives to old fashioned e-mail for communication.

I think we only survived as long because we were not too bad a the diplomacy bit ...

Cheers for the game, I enjoyed it.

RE: Fornax SystemWrite Reply

Well for me this was the best and enjoyable game I have played so far. I have learnt a lot about the game through working with others and playing against great players. I think i really enjoy the co-ordinated team game style the most at the moment and am sad the game has ended.

However T3 have deservedly won after some excellent play.Well played to all 12 of us as i think it was a good game indeed.

Reading the assessments already posted I would tend to agree with most of the points although i think there are other pivotal points not mentioned.

I will very much enjoy to see the turn histories at key points and see 'what might have been'

Listening to Mike talk about the Sanchez Brothers team play it is no wonder the result. That much history, experience and proximity for the 3 players in Team 3 is an almost insurmountable obstacle for 'novice' teams. Point also taken that the Team Britain group may well come backa more lethal force next game now they have 'warmed up' :)

Space,Thin and I have had many many chats about this game and our strategies. We also spoke about what we would do differently next time and there are a number of points which interestingly (and encouraging for us since we came to same conclusion) you have mentioned Mike about the roles each member plays in the team.

We did start out with these sorts of intentions but the discipline was lax on some occasions.

I also think we as T2 had our moments to conclusively take the game and some early 50/50 strategy decisions (and occasional mistakes) meant we were unable to do it.

there were many factors in the wiinning and losing of this game. I think we have proven the capability to defeat T1 and T4 from a military perspective(I really love the colony fightersweep... crackpot must hate me!), Musso even indicated their team combo was not as complimentary as possible. However Team 3's Web mine deployment was underestimated by ourselves (and the lack of a mine limits! hehe) that was just something we could not recover from once we had lost the first round of heavy ships and didnt have a critical mass of sweeping capability... lessons learnt well on that one for all 3 of us :)

I\m also not entire sure on my view about teams having mutual borders that they do not fight for.. myt view on these team games was it was everyone against everyone and diplomacy was about inital borders and not a perpetual agreement way into end game.. thats just my view but it certaibly didnt help us and massively helped T3 that they didnt need to bother with T4... still thinking about that one and dont know how it should play out as far as 'rules' etc. same as i would be uncomfortable about 2 teams allying and 'coming south' i think this topic was raised to heated debate in one of the eary team games but perhaps never concluded.

I think a lot could be said about this game and it is a shame we could not sit in person and have a beer over it to talk it through as again i feel some good learnings and perspectives would come out of it!

Regarding the ending of the game and 'resignation' For me I am proud of this game and I will not resign as i want it kept in my records so you will have me flitting around until  you achieve your 300 planets.

Good game guys and look forward to a time when we can have a rematch! Or maybe combine if there are larger formats opened again..

Halion.

Hi Halion,

A few of points you might be interested in.

While I was still mopping up Team 1 planets we were discussing our options regarding crossing the great web divide or pushing north (who did we trust the least :-)) - We only had ships for one fight. I was actually drifting left towards Team 3 when a happen-stance encounter between Ratigen and Thin Lizzy in the middle forced our hand (a big fat Virgo was waved tantalisingly in front of a fleet of MBRs) ...

Once committed we had little to fight Team 3 with, so we just mined the border and pushed everything north. I believe my mistake then was not having some Tranqs with T10 torpedoes (and giving them to Crackpot) to support my carriers in that push by the time we got some Cats Paws there the best planets were lost so we couldn't resupply torpedoes.

Obviously we did everything to keep Team 3 both worried and sweet but it was not so much unfair diplomacy as necessary diplomacy for us. Team 3 had more ships but were probably thinking along the same lines as us. Only mad dictators fight multiple enemies by choice and Crackpot only got one vote :-) ... Your problem, was you were so quick off the mark against Team 1 you had us all worried ...

Cheers Again

Musso
