Hi all. So ... the last time I played planets was like … 20 years ago? It was still on diskette. I have a question regarding tech: Do I need to research to have Tech9 available? Or can I build from the start and it is "just" more expensive?

When would I be building Tech1, Tech5 or Tech9? What are the different use cases?

Thanks! Really looking forward to this.

Welcome back!

On your HW you can raise all tech levels to 10 without beeing premium member (new form of registred player).

As premium player you can raise tech levels to 10 on all starbases. As free player / non registered player you can raise tech levels to 7 (except your homeworld which can got to 10).

Using tech levels ... thats a difficult questions and depends on your race.

Normally you use hull tech 10 to build your big warships and support ships like Merlin / Neutronic Refinery.

In most cases you will use tech 10 engines as well .. tech * tech sets the maximum length that can be travel in the same round / turn.

Beam tech depends on your next neighbours / enemies ... here the Fed ... I would suggest to use XRays / Plasma Bolts in the beginning and upgrade later to Heavy Blaster or Heavy Phaser.

Torp Tech ... you play a carrier race ... you can stop at tech 5 for Mark IV torps (best to lay minefields - small to midsized). If you found enough money ... raise to tech 8 for Mark VII torps to lay even big fields.

Just a word to the engines ... not every ships need Transwarps ... you can use Tow mission and towing ships with low engines at higher speed. In my games I using Stardrive 1 (for most stationary ships, early battleships), Nova Drive 5 (let them move a bit more than SD 1) and Transwarps.
