Hi guys! I want to try Borg now, but I did some levels and find that early game management is very hard. What should good Borg do with all clans, which dies from climate? Losing so many clans for nothing surely not good for you if you want strong economy...

I am not a good Borg but here are my thoughts:

Clan loss due to climate is a big problem. So you have to think about it a lot. You have to chose if you want to lose those clans. If you don't want to lose those clans you have to put less clans on to slow the build up. You need to provide more supplies to take advantage of building factories and mines or just to stop the death to temp. If you really want that planet with a long supply of natives or clan loss to temp you have to dedicate a ship to off load clans so you keep the assimilation / death rate slow.

So you may have to miss a planet or just drop 1 clan to check what it is capable of and have ships ready to off load clans onto a nearby planet.

But in most cases you have to decide a planet is not worth the effort and tax the clans and natives to the max to get as much out of them before they all die to temp extremes.

Clan loss due to climate is a way of life for the Borg. As is jettisoning some clans in deep space to avoid over-assimilating key planets. Just remember: It's all for the glory of the Collective!

Hail,

I have some experience with the Borg. Many consider the Borg drones to be quite expendable and will tolerate the Nu message Colony spam of never ending wails and death throes with nary a concern. I consider myself a benevolent despot who looks after the well being of his drones. Indeed, these drones are merely my clones.

200 of 201 my planets in the last game were beach paradises. Only the last planet I took did not have a chance to chunnel in the required climate ships to beautify that rock. I did at least make sure to provide entertainment services with a SB on each planet. Alas I did not have access to the Lady Royale Gambling ships for further entertainment purposes. I like happy drones!

I say trade for climate ships and clone them. Feds like probes and the idea of Federation crewed Biocides down the road. Lizards love those extra clans and have their Eros. You can easily chunnel the climate ship to fix any planet and make most of them difficult for ground assault. These same climate ships also are a nice deterrent against Falcon RGA.

In most games you will simply become inured to the death throes of your drones dying and remind them that just like Death is a certainty, you will most certainly be TAXXING them as well as they die....

Cheers,

In my experience playing Cyborg in some long-lasting games, I find that the clan loss from climate is offset by the early gains from a rapidly developed economy. To go from 5000000 to 500000 takes something like 20 turns, in that time you might have produced maybe 15000MC and built enough mines and factories to maximize the industry anyway, which continue to work even after the population has fallen below the maintenance level. In effect the Cyborg surpass the limitations of the climate, in exchange for the lives of those colonists.

Agree with @Maitre here. Don't stress it. Your losses at these planets will be more than compensated for at other worlds. If you can team with an early ally you can coordinate to have him 'rescue' these rocks before your Borgs get out of hand. I'd especially look to have your ally take the "good" planets (Bovi and educated Avian/Insectoid planets) as soon as practical.

Generally agree with the advice here so far. Some advanced players will 'farm' good natives - chunnelling STFs in and out to keep shipping clans out, so as to avoid growing their population too large and keep the natives alive. (Imagine my surprise when I conquer a planet the Borg have held from the early game...and find a healthy population of Insectoids with a Unity government.)

But that's a tough tactic, even for natives that are worth keeping. Terraformers are great, of course, but it's a minor enough issue, in the scheme of things, that you shouldn't lose sleep over it.
