Horwasp Questions: 1. Does "Infestation" (but not damage)...Write Reply
Horwasp Questions:

1. Does "Infestation" (but not damage) remove cloaking?
2. What step in the Host Order does infestation occur?
3. If infestation (but not damage) removes cloak, what step in the host Order does *this* occur.

I'm trying to figure out a situation. I'm under the belief that the Wasp should be able to "see" but not engage a cloaked ship. Right?

Situation 1: Non-Grav ship starts the turn cloaked, has mission set to cloak, and has no infestation or damage. It moves 7ly to a planet through a protofield (starting the turn in the field) (with 290 supplies on board) - and arrives at the planet to be engaged in ship to ship combat with a Hive.

Why did that happen? What did I miss?

Situation 2: Non-Grav ship starts the turn uncloaked (and outside a protofield). Sets it's mission to cloak and has no infestation or damage (with 195 supplies on board). It moves 78 ly (about 24 of that through a protofield) and arrives at the planet to be engaged in ship to ship combat with a Hive.

Again, why did that happen? What did I miss?

The only thing I can guess at is that infestation occurs, infestation decloaks, and then ship to ship combat happens. But I haven't seen any documentation to confirm that infestation (but not damage) would remove cloaking - but of course, the documentation for the 'Wasps is a mess.

Protoinfections cause damage. Period.
Protoinfection occurs during the movement phase. Protomine *damage* occurs right after the third Loki decloak, and before glory device detonation.

Which means that the ship decloaks. IF you have supplies on board the ship, then it will repair that damage before the combat phase. But it will still be decloaked.

Hi Chanain,

Thanks! I think I got it... but let's make sure I understand. Infestations cause damage which would (obviously) trigger my decloak, prior to ship to ship combat.

The thing I didn't seem to understand is that a new infestation and damage from a new infestation occur on the same turn? For some reason I was under the impression that infestation would occur on turn x, and damage from that infestation would occur on turn x+1, etc... And I'm just dead wrong about that. So when I've seen ships with infestation and no damage - and thus I must have had supplies repairing them and not realized it?

Yep, that's right. All about the host order: Infection happens before damage, so...

(Also, last time I flew through protofields, the new interface didn't show the infection, making it a much more opaque mechanic. Don't know if that's been fixed yet.)

Makes it pretty tough to use non-gravitonic cloak against the Wasps, especially given that they can instantaneously deploy a field around a planet. Tow-kill is a powerful strategy against them, but hard to do when they can see you coming and put up a small field guaranteed to break your cloak.

Two ways around that, really: (1) Plant a sweeper just outside the warp well first; or
(2) Command ships.

Thanks for the info Chanain!

I'm not too stressed about working around the problem - as long as I know the mechanics, I can plan my tactics. I haven't found the Horwasp especially difficult as of yet - I'm just running into an ignorance issue. **Something proper documentation would probably solve.**

I don't mind learning something new by having a few losses or failures - and that's what I'll chalk a handful of dead LCCs up to... but it's pretty infuriating when the information needed to make informed choices isn't easily available without searching through this wretched activity feed. /sigh
