Looking for feedback.

Using the new Level Editor, I've created a training simulation of the famous Battle of Wolf 359. The list of vessels present is as accurate as I could manage, and as it's set it's a no-win scenario. I beat it by thinking through the puzzle, but it took me a while and I learned some things.

The Events aren't working as I'd hoped, but... well, it'll do for now, I think.

Anyone up for a long and tedious challenge? I'd like to know what people think of the battle.

(Player-created Levels are located under My Games on the Levels tab, following the link at the bottom. This scenario is called Sector 001 -- Battle of Wolf 359.)

I'm still working on the basic design for that one. The available events don't quite serve my purpose, alas.

C'mon! Is nobody brave -- or bored -- enough to try and report?

I like the editor and understand it is limited in what is available. I have no problems with it as is. What I would like is an opportunity to create a scenario just like the old 3.5 editor. Example, create a scenario based on the Honor Harrington Universe. that would mean extended torpedo range, tech level adjustments, level limits, wormhole, and etc.

Well, that got my bloodlust out of the way for the day ;-). I like how you started out with battles on the first turn so it built up the anticipation. Alas, I lost. It may have helped if after I took the time to set the battle order if I would have finished by actually sending my Missouri as intended instead of letting it set there watching.... lol... COWARDS !!!!!

I tried twice and lost twice, and found a bug with the tool. :)

I like the scenario. Setting the warp speed and waypoint of the ships to the planet would save a lot of time in playing it so you can just set the battle order.

Luctus Cube end with 54% damage in my case and about 25 left mark8. I think you should add a Merlin inside the Fed fleet! :)

Agreed, @Joshua. I tried repeatedly to set those things but failed -- before re-reading the documentation and discovering that it wasn't allowed. :o)

Being able to set Enemy and Mission in advance was also very nice. One of the things I would have liked to have done was leave Notes on the individual ships; being a bit of a researcher, I became fascinated by some of the pseudo-history behind a few of these and would have loved to have left some of it behind for others.

@Ted -- I was considering doing exactly that, if I couldn't figure out a way to set up a solid battle scenario. Great way to burn up torpedoes. :o)

@Dragondejhi -- LOL! I kept leaving a big stack of small ships back at the start point and couldn't figure out why. Then I realized the awful truth: I'm absent-minded.

---

I'm going to modify this further, likely tonight, to incorporate the new Events. (Mars may get removed.) There's a couple of fairly urgent Documentation tasks awaiting me, however, and then there's Real Life too.

It took 3 tries, but I got some torp luck and took out the cube. Ok, I think I got a LOT of torp luck. The first few tries I only had the cube to 45-50% damage.

You're lucky (or good) to have done in in three, Garth. If you'd be willing to PM me your battle order, I'd appreciate it.

Nice scenario for testing battle-orders.

In my first attempt I damaged the cube to 89%.
My battle-order was solely based on weapon-strength (ships with highest torptech and most tubes first, single-beam ships last). I didn't take hull-mass into account yet, and looking at the VCR's, taking hullmass into account should give me a better result. It's midnight now, so will try again tomorrow.

Yes quite good fun, battle order in descending battle strength. Got Cube down to 80%. I would guess redoing this will provide different results. Could sim the success percentage but that feels like cheating.

Very exciting. I managed to kill the cube with my first try, but it was incredibly close. The Vendeta which he captured, I recaptured and then managed to destroy the cube with it. The Vendetta died by the Cube's last torpedo. No survivors, but earth is saved! What heroism!

I've taken your feedback into account, folks, and the scenario has been modified. Extraneous events have been removed thanks to the update in the development tool. Also, one typo which led to a minor force imbalance has been corrected.

The battle as designed should be winnable almost every time with wise battle order stacking.

I'd be interested in your battle order, Green Knight -- PM, if you don't mind.

Heh. I'm just barely beginning to grasp the concept of documenting this. Forget the Horwasp; this is the biggest thing to happen to Planets Nu since the Nu part got tacked on.

Actually, don't forget the Horwasp. That's pretty cool too. But my point still stands.

Hrrrmmmm. Well, the site will maintain a standard repository. That's pretty solidly in the architecture. I think what we will eventually need is an external poll-based Wiki structure, something that can link scenarios directly and have a creator's description as well as user comments.

Not sure I can build that, TBH.

Final revision tested. It's measurably harder, but still -- it's just a training tool. Anyone familiar with battling large ships with small may find it a bit basic.

The Federation has been saved. 19 ships survived, Cube exploded with 139 torps left unfired.

Battleorder in PM.

I didn't count the hits and misses of my torps, so maybe it just was my lucky day ;)

At the moment the first beam-only ships entered battle, the cube was just down to 80% damage so it fought with only 2 tubes left.
The heaviest of the beam-only ships, the Brynhilds, have enough mass to survive 2 MK8 torp hits, so they were guaranteed to survive the first salvo fired from the cube and thus themselves to fire all their beams at the cube. Each Brynhild would do 4% damage at least. So some of the Brynhilds and all Outriders, Erosses and Bohemians didn't need to fight at all.

First try: 22 ships left.
First non-torper killed the Cube. 145 torps left on it.

Too easy ;-)

(Well, the first small ship had a lucky punch and scratched the shields, but shhhh...)

Very good, gentlemen. You've gotten the hang of it.

So now for the true challenge: Defeat the Borg while keeping your Galaxy-class (OK, your Missouri) ship alive.

There are two solutions.

Very cool scenario, Gnerphk. I agree, the level editor is a great addition. I can see dozens of intermediate and advanced training levels being created to keep the AI competitive. Well done.
