Maybe this is another MvM quirk, but can anyone explain why...

I set the FC on Innsmouth to "nUk" after a ground attack captured the planet/starbase in case the two MISSOURIs decided to hang around. The Feds left but Stromm unexpectedly parked a PATRIOT in orbit that didn't (thankfully) get attacked.

Okay, to put this thread to rest... I tested a couple of combinations and:

Active Midshipmen - cannot attack or be attacked by Midshipmen

Open Races - cannot attack or be attacked by Midshipmen

Dead Races - can attack and be attacked by Midshipmen

The caveat here is that if someone drops out and progresses to "dead", any ships they left set to Kill! or planets set to nuk/att are hazards!

@GP:
IF it is really the case that the Midshipman cannot attack an open-slot-race (as the Empire at the moment), while the Mentor can, IMO this would be inappropriate. It would give the Mentor an advantage, the Midshipman can't do much against.
And it would be disappointing (something that especially this format should never be, as it should attract new players to the game).

@Syrio - an excellent point! (and *duh* on my part!) I just changed my diplomatic status with the Evil Empire and, you are correct, that should allow me to attack him even as "open" (which I will test this turn with a little ship). I only ever had "open communication" with the Cyborg player and so was able to attack his ship and planet when he was "dead".

To Meteors comment, and on a more philisophical note... having a few Mentor ships break out into open space kinda makes the game more interesting and a reasonable challenge when that open / dead race space is bordered by two active players. However, imagine if our Cyborg and Evil Empire were next to each other. That could set up a huge issue with distance and resources and allow a (horribly mean) Mentor to easily outdistance the Midshipmen. This would not be illegal, but perhaps not in the spirit of a MvM game since it is exploiting the dropping of players.

I went off to Cyborg space specifically to build a starbase to guard against Federation expansion in that direction.

Skokie dropping has created a minor but perplexing challenge that, with a little coordination, I'm sure we can solve!

I wonder if there is a Mentor's guide to the Mentor versus Midshipman guide that essentially says "Don't be a dick!" Shortly after turn thirty, our dearest Mentor could have abandoned his doomed space and marched his fleet up to any one of our homeworlds but what would that have taught the other races?... nothing except that it takes a lot of fuel and a long time to travel all the way across the sector!

"However, imagine if our Cyborg and Evil Empire were next to each other. That could set up a huge issue with distance and resources and allow a (horribly mean) Mentor to easily outdistance the Midshipmen."

When Jables dropped I had exactly the feeling you described with two dead neighbors used by the Mentor as his private refugium - and I didn't like it.

It teached me, that dropping players have a high influence on this game, that can change everything (something I do not like either).

"I went off to Cyborg space specifically to build a starbase to guard against Federation expansion in that direction"

Apparently we had the same reasoning. You may have noticed my shiny new SB on the distant edge of the galaxy?

"Shortly after turn thirty, our dearest Mentor could have abandoned his doomed space and marched his fleet up to any one of our homeworlds"

I don't think the Mentor could have done this. He had to cross the vast distances too, giving us time to prepare and fortify, having fuel support problems himself, and abandoning his own home area without protection he would have soon lost all abilities to build new ships.
I just took a look at T30 again and no, I don't believe it. (maybe in a different game with weaker Midshipman and more time for the Mentor to prepare...)
