Oh man, 6500 fighters destroyed this turn. That was fun! :)

There was a Super Star Carrier (4 bays) which didn't launch any fighters during the whole battle. My knowledge is that a no-launch should only happen to carriers with 3 or less bays. Anyone knows better and can enlighten me before I write a bug report?

Reminds me of an older VCR I recently watched where a Patriot (!) failed to launch any of its 15 fighters until the ships were ready to fire beams.

It happens when you have a battle between 2 entities where number of events is divisible into 7 or 17 I think. It gets into a cycle where same numbers are picked over and over again until new event is introduced.

Each beam, torp, fighter for each ship is event. Not sure what else, I am sure BB can opine in detail on this

Good idea, Hiko. I'll ask my opponent about accidental ntp. Thanks CSY and Azza, too.

This can happen to any carrier with 6 or less bays in particular situations, though the more bays the less likely it is. See my VCRs from turn 20 of the delightful Nightmare game, for a couple interesting variations of what can happen when firecloud meets patriot.

@Emork You can look for a discussion of mine in the forum about the Empire having such a handicap where all its Tech 9 carriers and below still suffer launch failures due to this random number generator bug/ feature that has plagued this game since the beginning. Completely handicaps the already weakest race.

Nothing better than watching your Super Star Cruiser get smoked by a Tranquility because it won't launch fighters.

At one time, it looked like the power at be were looking into replacing the RNG with something that actually works properly, and completely eliminate the bug/feature. The discussion revealed it really is a simple fix.

@Lord+Pollax,

Unless that post was in the last few days, he won't be able to see it.

There is a known "issue" with the random number table not being a prime number. It is, in fact 7 x 17, which means that combats that use either 7 or 17 random numbers may cause no launches on smaller carriers.

Just to register an opinion, I'd love to see development time put into this kind of improvement (RNG, ion storm/sphere mechanics, game message mechanics, etc.) ahead of spin off games or new in-game abilities.

Is there any kind of ruleset / educated guess ... how the battle order follows, when all ships had fight one time ...

Sometime captured ships fight at unexpected slots :-)

@Frosty

Big Fleet combats seems to become more and more rare than in the past, but i suggest you to take as control the ship list/fleet view inside the new NU Client. You can sort your ship to the current battle value of the regular combat order.

Probably depends more on who's getting left side and 'right' RNG. Torpers all front or intermixed.

Team "Bo" (all Lizard crewed): 3 Rex, 1 Super Star Carrier, 1 Super Star Cruiser, 13 Gorbies

Team "Emperors" (all Fed crewed): 4 Heavy Thor, 13 Virgos

All ships with PE set, free choice of FC, meeting at a designated battlefield (since the team game is about to end)

All ships but 2 Virgos destroyed, one of them at 51% damage.

Both sides lose 492.000 military score.

@Geofoxy,

> left side and 'right' RNG

There is no left or right RNG table. The same RNG table and index is used for both sides. In fact, there are three different RNG tables (used for different things during combat), and all three use the same index.

@Frostriese,

> Is there any kind of ruleset / educated guess ... how the battle order follows, when all ships had fight one time ...
> Sometime captured ships fight at unexpected slots

This is explained in the Order of Battle page (http://planets.nu/#/howtoplay/battle-order).

@Kelmain,

> I'd love to see development time put into this kind of improvement

This particular improvement (change RNG table to have a prime length) has been requested in the past (we don't know how many times, as the old threads aren't currently available). The response (sometimes explicit, mostly by the developers ignoring the request - something that they're VERY good at doing) has always been that this is the way it worked in THOST, and it will not be changed (an interesting response, considering how many unnecessary changes have been made - http://planets.nu/#/howtoplay/VGAP-3-differences). This exact same response (or non-response) has been seen for several similar "bugs".

While I understand the wish to stay as close as possible to THOST, the developers should remember that Tim Wisseman is Human (i.e. just as prone to error as the rest of us), and that NO piece of complex code is ever bug-free. With these facts in mind, I believe that historical bugs should be addressed. If it's intended operation, I feel that we should be so informed, and an explanation should be provided (to keep the issue from being brought up in the future).

Well, simple multiplication.

Team Bo: 4x3 (Heavy Thor) + 11x7 (Virgo) = 89 PBP gained
Team Emperors: 3x5 (Rex) + 2x3 (SSCa+SSCr) + 13x10 (Gorbie) = 151 PBP gained

Captain Obvious analyzes: Fed Bonus plus lean carriers is murderous.

Virgo ligh weight carrier have already one of the best battle values, compared with the ship mass, in the game. With Fed/Lizard/Klingon Bonus it simply beat all heavy carriers.

Virgos and Rushes. They only give 7 PBPs when destroyed, but in Fed hands, they can take down anything under the sun. The enemy with Gorbies or Bios gets PBP starved and needs to pay 21 or 19 PBPs to rebuild their loss (meaning -14 PBPs on a 1:1 Gorbie-Virgo trade) while the Fed side only has to pay -4 PBPs to rebuild a Virgo after toasting a Gorbie.

Makes a difference of 10 PBPs per 1:1 trade. I can positively assure you that this doesn't make for winning wars of attrition.

==> "Lean" heavy carriers in Fed hands win wars.

Mentar what you say about PP gain is true, but if the Virgos are used by the Fed that PP gained cannot be used to build other Virgos.

Like I wrote, in Campaign mode they can - via Advanced Cloning.

In Classic, they can funnel PBPs gained to the Colonial/Rebel partner via SDSFs.

Only in non-Campaign Standard, there is no lossless solution for this.

The Feds build SDSFs with PBPs, hand them over to their fighterbuilder ally, so that they can recycle them on their bases for PBP again. Alternatively, you can also use a hostage to hand over swaths of SDSFs in one turn to the hostage, and have a fighterbuilder ally shoot them to bits in the same turn (and therefore receiving the PBPs via battle).

thank you Mentar, I understand the technique, but..

if the 500 ship limit has just been reached the Fed player will only be permitted to build one SmallDeepSpaceFreighter in Classic

Hattori: If the 500 ship limit has been reached, the Fed won't be able to build anything - neither SDSF nor capship ;)

Mr. Universe: Well sure... except that a Lizard Gorbie is reliably eating 5 Missouris before the sixth has a 80% chance to take him down. That's not quite as PBP-effective as a Virgo, methinks... ^_^;
