i was wondering if anyone else is missing the option to chat with each other in a less confusing way then the feed and private messages.

Assuming that i am not the only one, i created a Slack Team (planetsnu.slack.com) which is basically a modern IRC server just for us.

sadly i can only set the joining to invite only or certain email domains. So if anyone would like to try that PN me with an email address, and i will send you the invite.

Slack also makes a decent forum replacement, with the caveat that you need to either upgrade to a paid account or accept that old messages will be deleted.

It is an age old battle for software builders... Put simple and effective messaging in applications where it needs to be or build a larger more complex messaging platforms when quite frankly there are a lot of platforms already out there.

Non game direct messaging would be good with a history, reply capability etc in a tab, but is it essential. Probably not.

well actually Slack does that.

Like an Instant Messanger from the old days (ICQ, AIM,..) you can see who is online and have private chats (and it doesnt matter if the other person is currently online or not). And it comes wiht a PC and MAC Client.

And of course you can see the chat history or even search it.

Like IRC, you have channels with topics that may or mayy not be restricted.

Like modern IMs (Whatsapp, Telegram, SecureChat, Threema,..) you have formidable groupchats, emoticons and a mobile app.

In Addition you have the ability to drop files, share images (similar to modern IMs but more feature rich,)

yes. IRC has its up, ut is a bit outdated. Slack is basically like IRC in ayn ways, but with a more secure and easier to use modern architecture.

You can start private channels for your sector or Alliance. Its a bit like whatsapp, just better and you dont need to give your phonenumbebr out. :)
