Question about making sure your ship arrives at it's destination without any fuel.

Why did this happen?

What should I have done?

When issuing movement orders, you should ensure that the needed and available fuels match.

If you issue an order that would cause your ship to burn more fuel than is available, then your ship will move a proportional distance, and that caused you to fall short.

If the needed and available fuels match, isn't there a danger that I would arrive with one unit of fuel remaining? In the example, the ship could travel an extra square after reaching the warp well. If I set movement orders to just reach the warp well, wouldn't there have been one fuel left in the tank?

I also don't fully understand what you mean by "proportional distance." How could I work this out? Could you elaborate?

In your example, if you assigned an order that needed 24 fuel, but your ship only had 23 on board, then it would move 23/24 of the distance.

I have noticed what I assume to be rounding errors when playing the Horwasp. To conserve fuel I use warp wells a lot, and I frequently have just enough fuel when I plan a flight path, only to be 1 short the turn following departure. I always fly with an extra kt of fuel just in case. That would make it decidedly crappy for a standard race fighting the Priv, for example. It doesn't impact the Wasp as much.

I don't know why this wouldn't be universal (all races), but I can't say that it is.

@challengespaceyard,

I'm sorry but I'm really really thick. You said...

"...then it would move 23/24 of the distance."

Like is that 23 divided by 24? which would be 0.9583 (according to my calculator) where 1 would be equal to 24 fuels worth of distance?

Or another way of saying that would be 95.83% of 24. So that's 0.24 (1% of 24) multiplied by 95.83 which apparently equals 22.99 fuels worth of distance?

So lets say I set my distance to need 100 fuels. That would be 23/100 or 0.23 where 1 would be equal to 100 fuels worth of distance. Or 23% of 100. which would be 23 fuels worth of distance.

So in other words....if I had set the distance further...I might actually have made it?

In that case, you would only get to move 95.83% of the designated distance, and burn all of your fuel in the process. I believe the distance traveled rounds down as well.

So am I correct in the case of my 23/100 example?

Yep. If you only had 23 fuel, then you would move 23/100, or 23% of the distance.
