Question on Ion Storms - in a single Player game I have a...Write Reply
Question on Ion Storms - in a single Player game I have a huge minefield. Only enemy is Robot. The minefield does overlap some hostile planets far away from it's Center, so even if there would be Sweepers I think they could not reduce it very much in size.
Now in one turn, the minefield suddenly vanishes. No significant Change but mine Decay is to be seen on hostile Minefields.
There is a Class 4 Ion storm passing over the minefield. In last turn, it covered the Center of the Mine Field (so I think sweeping with Lasers should not be possible anyway on the mine field - side Question, would mines destroy mines of a field with its Center in an Ion Storm?).
So I think there might be two Options:
1. The Ion Storm destroyed the mine field in the turn where the Ion Storm was overlapping the Mine Field at start of the turn - however this effect I do not see documented anywhere.
2. The mine field cannot be detected as long as its Center is covered by an Ion Storm (this is documented) - but does this apply to own mines? In other words, does my mine field still exist, but is hidden by the storm even to myself?
3. I am missing something. Any ideas?

You can always see your own minefields/webs/protfields, even ones laid by other players using 'miX' FC on the other side of the map.

Fighter minesweeping and mines annihilating other mines still occurs despite Ion Storms.

I think @Ghostrider's answer is most likely: you were countermined (and should have a report about it).

Depending on what you mean by "very much in size", this may or may not be true. For a full size minefield with 22500 mines, they could still sweep up to 3200 mines (using a merlin with heavy phasers). Even more if that didn't reduce the minefield enough and it still covered their planets. But it wouldn't make the entire minefield disappear and it's pretty far-fetched for a single player game.

Hmmm strange, I now look at those turns in replay, and now this sentence "No significant Change but mine Decay is to be seen on hostile Minefields." is not true anymore. Enemy mine fields were created, which makes the countemining a very likely explanation. Just wondering if there was a graphical error or something, that showed me wrong information about the enemy minefields... for non single-player games this would not be an issue as there the map is usually loaded freshly, but maybe in singleplayer sometimes when going to next turn some info is not properly updated. Will keep an eye on it if I notice such thing again.
Or maybe I just got completely confused. Also always a possibility :)

It *is* true, assuming that sentence is about ion storms hiding minefields...it just includes minefield creation in the definition of "significant change". Ion storms prevent minefield *scanning* as well as minefield *sweeping*, which means you won't see:
1) new minefields (they remain hidden)
2) minefields increasing in size (they appear at their original size)
3) minefields decreasing in size (they appear at their original size, except from decay, I guess)
4) minefields that were scooped or destroyed (they appear at their original size)

@Zacha: The new Client doesn't always show all the minefields on the Starmap, this is unlike the Desktop Client.

I have only heard this about the new Client, not experienced for myself... I only recall something about ships can see them, planets can't... starbases unsure (some can minelay/minesweep in Campaign).

If that doesn't sound right, my other guess is you were using scripts, specifically Mcnimbles and accidentally turned off displaying enemy/your-own minefields as he has options for that.

No, only script I have installed so far is one which enables some old VPA keyboard shortcuts. Nothing meddling with any graphics. Might have experienced a bug in the Client. If this is just happening if in one session the minefields change, no big issue (as this usually only happens in single player), but if in normal games this also happens, this is quite a bug... but likely a difficult one to tackle if not stable reproducible.

@Decius: valid points, but ion storm was not in area where it could have covered up any enemy minefields center. With "no significant change" I meant they slightly decreased due to attrition, but nothing else. Of course I have plenty of ships on mine scanning, and as mentioned, it was next to certain the Ion Storm didn't cover some enemy mine-laying.
As graphics look now on replay significanlty different than what I remember from a bouple of hours ago, I tend to believe it was some bug, especially as Glyn reported on such bugs bein reported already in current client.

Next time I notice something similar I'll make some screenshots - just in case it is a bug that might help to tackle it.

You could probably use the time machine and get some now if you wanted.

@Nebulon: that's the point, in time machine now the map looks perfectly reasonable, in that enemy mine fields are now visible in the critical turn. I am 99% sure it was not looking that way when I was playing the turn, the enemy mine fields were not visible. So maybe there is just some bug in sending some data between the database and the Script. But can't tell for sure. Will watch for similar oddities and then make screenshots - and compare those then with the time machine a few turns later. If there is then discrepancy, this is then quite good proof of a bug (though not necessarily a definite lead to identify the bug exactly).
But again, there is also of course chance that I got confused. I am still new to Planets Nu, so I cannot definitely rule this out :)

Go back in your time machine looking for reports of mine detonations.

An ion storm over your own fields prevents accurate scanning.
