Question on maximum ship travel distance. I am confused about something that just happened in a game, let me explain

Turn - 26
MBR tows a Virgo and attacks one of my planets and takes it. I can see the Virgo there in orbit. I took a screenshot so you can see its position and the position of my SB. http://i60.tinypic.com/10n73x3.png

Turn -27
Virgo is nowhere to be seen, not showing up in the warp well or when I mouse over any of the red dots on the map. I assume he is still on that planet, grabbing supplies and repairing from the last battle. Here is a screenie: http://tinypic.com/r/2e4m0p3/8

Turn - 28
The Virgo shows up at my SB which is 94.4 LY away and explodes. While I am happy he died, I cant figure out how he got to that planet. Even if he did not show up in the warp well of the original planet it is still 89 ly from warp-well to warp-well. How did he get to that SB?

I'm trying to understand the game but I thought 81 ly was the max distance a normal ship with no specials could travel.

My guess would be the MBR towed the Virgo to another planet which you do not have visibility on (up to 160 ly away from the planet taken), that is within 81 ly of your SB. So on turn 27, the Virgo was not at that planet, but another one closer to your SB.

The only planets within 81 ly are all owned by me except one which I had a cloaked scout sitting at and never saw the virgo show up. Is it possible to tow while doing the gravimetric hop? If you can tow while doing the grav thing, he could have jumped to an unowned planet and then jumped 150ly to my SB but that really does not make sense. Here is the screenie of the distances for that: http://tinypic.com/r/4ftjbd/8 I guess if he could grav-hop the Virgo he could have just grav-hopped to my SB.

I dont see this as likely since he never grav-hopped it when bringing it down to my space and at this point I only have a few cloaking Coldpains and he knows it. He would have no reason to move from the first planet he took in turn 26 since he knows I have no ship that could even bring his Virgo shields down to 50%

I guess it comes down to, can you tow while grav-hopping? That would explain it.

There is no "grav hop". Gravimetric ships, such as MBR, always move twice as fast as other ships. So yes, they do get the gravimetric advantage while towing.

Thanks, I didnt realize you could tow and get the extra distance in an MBR. That clears it up nicely.

One thing you didn't mention; the mcbr towed the virgo to your planet on turn 26.. turn turns later when it got destroyed was there also an mcbr at the planet? If an mcbr had towed the virgo to the planet 94ly away the mcbr would still be visible in orbit after the virgo died.
