The tournament rules state that you can pick your race for each game. Presumably that's done independently of the opponent, and you're both stuck with that race for the entire best of three round.
Yes. I clarified the regulations so that, unlike the previous tournament, players can choose any race at the start of each game, including in the middle of a pairing.
I also offer a randomization utility in case any player is unsure of what to pick at any time or that actually want to have fun playing this tournament (or a fraction thereof) as "random".
One (Little) question: how many turns at day/at week/at month/at century? I write "century" because there are a player especially slow. I played a lot of Blitz games vs him Always the same person... I don't know what's the reason (malediction?) I think planets it's a game for enjoy quietly, but not eternal!
Each game hosted on Nu contains an Identification Number (ID). I must know those numbers so that I can monitor progress and verify game outcomes. Good luck playing as "random".
By contacting me with those numbers, I can verify that a particular game of a pairing has been setup and possibly started. If I receive no contact from either player in a timely manner regarding this, I can disqualify both and grant the player that would be battling this pairing's winner a bye.
Before we do get started, I want to make sure you are aware of the 2 custom game victory options.
One is owning 50% of the total owned planets. So if player 1 owns 8 planets and player 2 owns 4. However player 2 has 70% of the military score. Player one will win in 5 turns. SO if player 1 was crystal's and player 2 was the privs, it would be very difficult to overturn that situation.
the other is having 65% of the military score. Which a colony player vs a torp race could just build 2-3 gemini's and chuck them full of fighters and win ridiculously fast.
I just clarified the bracket by aligning the names to the right. I don't yet have an automatic profile facility. Maybe I can implement this in the image map...
Update: Profile links are now embedded into the image map.
By the way, I don't know if everyone agrees but I think it would be nice if we make all the games public and don't delete them immediately after completion so more inexperienced players (such as myself) can learn from others.
OK, I joined the game just to stop anyone else wondering in. I'll be traveling this week, so maybe just one or two turns per day for me. At least until weekend!
EDIT: Also I remember myself and jobo from the last tournament, but who is the 3rd returning player?
"In blitz games you see the race of the 2nd player by just looking at the
game overview where it states who joined and as which race.
The
race of the 1st player can then be checked by selecting a primary enemy
on the LDSF: the only race available is the race of your opponent.
E.g.: In our blitz tournament game you are the Feds."
This is partly why in the previous tournament, I believe, eraulli suggested everyone is locked into a race that's declared to the tournament organizer. To ensure that both parties have the same information, I suggest that after starting a game, the first player not click turn ready so that he has the opportunity to check the second player's race.
Unfortunately, valhalla, there is now no room to accept applications. Applications came in very fast, and the last application arrived about 23 hours faster than the previous tournament.
About @turssi request: which is turn periodicity? daily? 3turn/week? I think tha rules must be the same for all the players
About @coldsteel stuff. I choose randomize my race, but I don't want my opponent know previosly whitch is. I suggest, like @coldsteel, players tell previosly to @challengespaceyard the race they choose for next game, and when @challengespaceyard has both info, from 2 players, he publish here and Blizt game starts... (I don't know haw randomizer utility could integrate in this scheme)
A drop like that usually indicates a concede. Therefore, you already won the first game of the first round. Win the second game, and you'll advance to the second round.
Also. The description has not been updated to reflect the not so recent changes to the blitz games.
thats mean :( that was my first blitz game ever i felt like i got screwed crystals just mined up everywhere... Is it just me or is that matchup just awefull
Yeah, the colonies are not very well suited to take on the crystals in a blitz game. Unless you know exactly what you're doing I would say avoid these races when picking: - Empire - Rebels - Colonies - Borg - Privateers
Also, you're playing the best-seeded player in the tournament so don't be discouraged.
Challenge/Kokunai, someone else joined in the blitz game I'll have to male a different game and complete this one. I still have my other blitz slot empty.
Challenge/Kokunai, someone else joined in the blitz game I'll have to male a different game and complete this one. I still have my other blitz slot empty.
Since there is currently no blitz ladder, the best I could immediately gather information was from the epic leaderboards. From what I see, I may have to require an established rank in future tournament(s), or even propose a split tournament, where beginners can go in one branch while more experienced players go in another branch.
Vase and I finished our first game, and we will start the next shortly.
details on the old game
http://planets.nu/games/33132
Do anyone know if you can change race during the match, or if you are stuck with your original choice?
edit: nevermind, just noticed that it is indeed allowed.... now what will Vase think that I will pick for the next game, and what will that make him pick... oh my.
got even a nice visiting meteor (flying rock, not the blockade runner) to my HW turn 5, but that didn't stop the wheels in motion:)
@curthistheiii as coldsteel pointed out don't be discouraged, you'll learn the quirks of the game only by playing and I had a little more games behind me than you.
@challengespaceyard To select players experimented and not experimented, you could close the player cue when there are, for example, 16 players and then order tehm into 2 groups, one for more experimented (take achiviments for it), and one for newbies.
@calbasi: I could split it into the novice (Lt. and under) and expert (Lt.-Commander and above) branches in the next tournament. It looks like I also need to make the overall tournament size bigger.
Unlike the previous tournament, this tournament's slots filled up nearly day faster, and 2/3 more applications came in after tournament was filled.
joined. im fine with playing both at once. hopefully the problems resolve themselves? if not, go ahead and delete the game and restart at your discretion.
@pgaige: it seems the second game has the same bug. I've opened a bug report at http://planets.nu/discussion/errors-in-blizt-games-parsererror-syntaxerror-unexpected-token
Could you open a Blizt game? (we could forget these 2 previous games, and let them to vgaplanets.nu staff for testing...
Hi Turssi! The tax rate problem in HW in a Blitzgame is demolishing It happened to me (2 turns with -60 happiness) and I don't recover. Not in this tournament Did you play drunk? hehehe good strategy... imagine if you win Nice tournament!
With mark8 torps they are a cost efficient ship against mark4 missouris or nebulas or something like that.
I ran that in the VCR and then started building them. Only with mark7s. And you didn't have any mark4 torp ships! So no luck.
EDIT: Also when you get down to 0 planets and ships you receive a special message: "Your empire in VGA Planets game 33383: 1 on 1 Blitz has been destroyed.
You have been removed from the game. Better luck next game!". So at least that was nice.
..could be worse.. Jomii & I are 1 vs 1 and in the final game he just took out my HW in a rather bold move.. it's gonna be difficult from here on in :)
I have no news of @pgaige. I think he is missing... If that is true, could @challengespaceyard assign me another counterpart?? He could join this game:
http://planets.nu/games/33530 Regards
@calbasi: I can't seem to contact pgaige, either. If I receive no response within the next 24 hours, I'm disqualifying him and, to help keep this tournament moving, pairing you up with the winner of 1 vs 16, jkovalainen.
Just so all remaining players know, many blitz-related bugs have been fixed.
The military score is now hidden on the very first turn of a game.
Game log should no longer spoil away the race that the second player joins a private blitz game as. Does not affect blitz games that have already been started.
You can no longer use the primary enemy setting to determine the race your opponent has picked.
Race icons are no longer visible in the diplomacy section on the first turn of a game.
Game layout was accidentally broken as new features were released. It is fixed now.
I was closer to the victory: in th 10 turn!!!. But in these moment I only had 2 meteors... only 2
The combination of T-Rex + Loki + Hiss mission (I underestimated it) + 150 % of damage... In a Blitz game (1 on 1), play with Privateers have the handicap than I cannot Rob another races
Congratulations to Crackpot (very good player) for the game! Interestingly, hard fought andexciting Good luck Crack
Is this a bug, just got sent my first 2nd round game http://planets.nu/games/33917
..but it shows me as Lizards .. I want to pick my race so wont click Join until I know it won't force me to be a lizard .. and is it showing jobo as a Fascist .. seems wrong & wasn't like my first round match.
Yeah, it was a good one. I tried but that last ship being damaged and I didn't notice took it out of cloak and let the planet kill it. It was carrying colonists to take your worlds...but overall you prepped for the loss of your sb I didn't. Well played.
There is a bug that forces the second player to play as the Lizard Alliance. Therefore, a pause is still necessary because of the unnecessary restrictions this creates on blitz games and, as a result, the remainder of this tournament.
The bug has finally been fixed. Here's more information from the site itself:
Bug fixed! Tournament defrosted!
After receiving word that the private blitz bug has been fixed and verified the fix(es), it is now safe to defrost the tournament and get Round 2 going! Good luck, players.
Attention: This bug has been fixed only for new games! Existing games that were made prior to the bug fix still have traces of the bug and need to be deleted.
Yeah, here too. I create a game and it says error in game creation, administrator was informed. And then it actually it does create a Turn 0 game, but I can't join it -- it give an error parsing.
I'm going to suggest that you can veto the map on the first turn and ask me to make a new one. I already took the liberty of throwing out the first one I created because the map seemed unbalanced in my favour -- there were two clusters, one in which I had 11 planets and a second one in the opposite end that presumably had your HW but only 5 planets.
p.s. now however the first player who creates the game no longer has unknown race listed so the second player has the benefit of knowing what the first player picked.... would be nice if it was listed as unknown as before.
There's a bug that games aren't completed even when you reach 100% and since only 2 running games are permitted I will have to delete it after a while. CS let me know when I can delete it.
A little question... should these Blitz games be anonymous ? I can see that Calbasi has created the game as he's going the Borg .. so I know what races to play to beat him... Shouldn't this tournament be blind so you find out as you play?
It seems that after the bug-fix the first player's race choice is no longer anonymous. I think that's a problem as the second player will know what the first player picked.
I feel some of Joshua's bug fixes were a bit questionable as well, but I have no control over how he fixes these bugs.
For the remaining players: I hope all of you can get the first game(s) of Round 2 set up soon. I'd rather not disqualify anyone from this round as I did in Round 1, if I can help it.
- first player's race choice is known by second player prior to picking race
- game doesn't end when victory condition is attained
As long as the first player doesn't mind his race choice being known, the second one can be worked around by informing CS when the victory conditions have been attained.
By the way, there is what I would say an improvement as well. Now we start with one MDSF instead of one LDSF which makes the game less about luck in finding a native world faster than your opponent.
Crackpot and my game finally finished with a win for me... we will start the next game after a well-deserved rest.
http://planets.nu/games/34754
76 turns of brutal slaughter, finally stranding crackpots fleet with no high-tech engines and what I assume is a fuelless wastedump (my old hw), and me with a starbase on his old homeworld ;)
@jobo and coldsteel: A break or an early series is fine with me, since the other pairings are still on their first game(s), and they are going slow (and the military scores are also close together)
I'm resigning from Game 1, the system message of having to spend fuel to keep shields up in web mines isn't coming up. Caught me offguard 2 times during the game. :(
My ruby #13 is sitting ontop of your nebula class cruiser, and it's telling me it's out of fuel, yet I can't tow it or see it. I'm sorry, but I think this game is a scratch.
Unless you think you have some reason why I wouldn't be able to see or tow your ship.
Not being able to tow your ship makes this game unplayable.
On top of that. Just because a ship got web-drained of its remaining fuel does not mean it cannot move.
If he anticipated a web drain would drain his very last fuel, then he could have attempted to move in such a manner to ensure that he could still move without burning any fuel. As far as I understand, a web-drain does not stop this trick, only triggering a web-mine does.
First off, thanks for looking into this Joshua. Second off this is news to me. So a ship that isn't moving, at warp 0, and who I have received a message saying has no fuel from the previous turn-- the very next turn can fly over 7 LY's away?
Please explain this ridiculous trick which nullifies the need for fuel.
Plus, is the web mine message telling me where the ship is that is out of fuel supposed to be inaccurate? Does it tell me where he was last turn? Because it tells me it's right on top of my ship.
All these things I have never seen before, please explain.
A ship without fuel (especially a light one) can move a few lightyears each turn. It will then be reset to warp 0, so it will appear at warp 0. If you are trying to capture it, you need to "intercept" the ship in your webmine field to make sure that you end the turn at the same location. The next turn, you can then tow-cap it.
The "no fuel" coordinates is probably from when the ship originally was at, since drain is before movement. The maximum non-gravitonic distance without burning fuel, with Transwarp Drives, is:
ceil(100/floor(HullMass/10))
A ship that tries to go any farther than the computed result without fuel will fail to move at all.
In the host settings there is an option as to whether or not ships can move without fuel. In Nu I've always seen this feature on.
It allows a ship to move a distance without fuel. Just like if you set warp one you can travel forever without burning fuel. Or with a fuel carrier with transwarps completely unladen can travel at warp 9 without burning fuel. There is a ratio that involves ship mass, engine, and speed to incorporate fuel burn. If you travel a given distance that wouldn't burn fuel due to the engine efficiency then you don't. Most ships can only move less then 10 ly's.
So your going to have to use intercept to get to my ships. And you never know what random minefield or ship you could run into O_o
Coldsteel, hurry up with your turn, otherwise you'll get dropped from the game, which would be a shame considering that whopping minefield you just dropped ;)
So I've discovered there's a bug where I have 10 mk7 tubes at my SB that never disappear. I've been doing super-refits and they automatically get added to my starships. Right now, if I do a super-refit I don't even want these mk7s but they're going to be on my ship next turn. I've unknowingly been using these for a couple of turns. I think if I get 10 of any component on a ship it's going to stick. So if I get 10 HPs on one of my Novas you are going to be so dead because of this bug. I would suggest that the game is not playable until this bug is fixed.
I've noticed another minor bug (discussed elsewhere in the forum), where the first ship you build with torps gives you the same amount of free torpedoes (e.g. build an Ill wind with 2 mk7 torp launchers, and you will get 2 free mk7 torps next turn).
Perhaps they did some changes to the starbase ship-building system.
Do you still want me to pause until we get official confirmation that it's not a problem or do you just want to keep going and if I see this recurring I'll pause then?
@jkovalainen I can't move first 2 turns ;-) And this put things difficult for me, but I can win at last ;-) (http://planets.nu/games/35859)
Then, jkovalainen: 1win , calbasi 1 win: draws :-)
Third and last round:
I've notice that if I hosted a new game, second player can see my race before it join the game. That's a disadvantage for hoster. If you agree, I suggest we both send a private message to @challengespaceyard with our desired race. When @challengespaceyard had received both messages, he could publish here our race preference and we can, then, start third game ;-)
Yeah I agree we should send the race picks to challengespaceyard. After he confirms both here I can set up the game this time around (as you have created both the previous ones)
I started well, but I hate webmines a lot right now... I don't know how you're supporting so much webmine production. I guess if I don't get to see your turn at the end of this game, I don't really want you to see mine either. How do you de-activate publicly viewable turns?
You just send a messasge to Joshua (through the 'contact us' link) and ask to have your turns locked down. It is not that I'm against allowing people to watch my turns, but I prefer to be the one that decides who gets to see what - I've never played on any planets-site where turns where public by default, and I find it somewhat invasive that NU does it.
If turns where private by default, with the option to release them for public viewing (or even better, you could allow specific players to gain access to them), that would be a great feature. It would allow me to share specific blitz games with my opponent after the game, without giving everyone else access.
Anyhoo, let's rumble, I have more webmines for you ;)
Blitz games are not deleted until the game is no longer on either participant's list. Unfortunately, the game is automatically deleted from the loser's list if he was totally destroyed.
I voted for the bug, but my hopes are not high - the waiting time for bugs posted on that website is long - some of the bugs reported have been unresolved for ages :(
My best bet would be a direct mail to Joshua, I'm not sure that the staff monitors that site very well.
Ok, I'm not really sure what is causing this to occur. It looks like some duplicate data is getting inserted somehow. If you get any errors or anything please let me know. But for now it should be fixed.
@jkovalainen: well played ;-) Birds have few options against Lizard... and I don't play very well, I think ;-)
Ps.: ramdom races are terrible: borg and birds... 2 weak races for a Blitz game!!
Ps.: By the way, I've seen you are a skilled Bird player... I'd like a game against you with the opposite races: birds for you and Lizard for me. Do you accept?
@calbasi, yeah you were pretty much screwed with those races from turn 1 :)
sure we can try bird vs lizard the other way around for practice and fun if you want. I'm definitely not a skilled Bird player when it comes to blitz games though!
@jkovalainen: Great :-) Could I host this new Blitz? I'll try to play Lizard as well as you have done, but I think it's impossible to get a victory sooner! Maybe even I fail to win you :-p Let's see...
@mycroft Do you want to play a Blitz against me? You with the Birds, me with the Lizards. I'd like to see your birds in action ;-)
@coldsteel - something strange seems to have happeneded to your nova id#6 this turn - it gained 72 mass while inside my webmines, and none of the other (fuelless) ships next to it had any change in mass, and your own minefield was not scooped, so it wasn't a net gain in torps.
Any idea what happended?
Regards
EDIT: Nevermind, found your nebula id#13, it had sneaked 1 LY to the side, I think I know what happended ;)
Hey jobo, that was a really challenging game! Everytime I took a risk, you punished me. I got really lucky with some unlikely minehits at the beginning, and I think that swung it my way. I really thought I lost my entire fleet on a couple of occasions. Would it be okay if we declare me the winner right now without actually finishing the game since I'm at 89.13% and Joshua hasn't gotten back to me about my turns being visible or my being able to see your turns.
For the next game, because of the bug where the first player's race is known, I suggest the fair thing to do is that we first send our race choices to CS.
Yep, you got me there. I really though that with a double layered minefield, I would be safe, but one of your nova's got through :(
I was damned close at one point, where I had a whole bunch of your ships fuelless, but coward that I was, I was to late in picking them up - oh well, next game it is.
So we both send our race choice in a private mail to ChallengeSpaceyard and he then tells us what our choices where?
I can setup the game once we get the race choices ;)
@Coldsteel - are you still in-game? Your ships have been sitting awfully still the last few turns, and I'm assuming it's not just because of my webs...
I had this problem in my game vs yellowbrick, who is playing crystalline so I would expect him to have tried to lay mines as well (and I can't see any).
I've unpaused Coldsteel and my game - though I'm still unsure if Coldsteel is active. The host runs while I sleep, so I cannot see if he submits a turn (holiday mode for the win!), but he is not building any new ships, so either he is out of resources (could be, I've locked him down with webmines), or something else is happening.
Hey Jobo, you won our game. Well played! Let's send our choices to CS and start game 3. I'll make the map and just choose the first one that gets randomly generated. If it's unfair (e.g., isolated homeworld) I will remake after we both take a look at it.
I'm having a bug and will pause the game until an admin takes a look. I'm trying to build a ship and cannot add engines to it. I was able to purchase both the hull and the engines but the GUI just won't let me add the engines to the ship.
Never mind, I was just being silly. I do see duplicates of ship components but it's okay as they're listed as 0s instead of free components as before. It's weird, they go away sometimes and come back.
By the way, I don't know what happened but I was very puzzled by your drop in score on turn 3. There were no minefields that decayed, I didn't destroy any ships, you didn't recycle/colonize any warships... very intriguing;)
By the way, I don't know what happened but I was very puzzled by your drop in score on turn 3. There were no minefields that decayed, I didn't destroy any ships, you didn't recycle/colonize any warships... very intriguing ;)
Ah btw, the drop in score on turn 3 was due to me dropping a minefield. It appears that torps count more towards military score than the minefields does, and I think I dropped a 100 Mk7 field in turn 3, attempting to lockdown the better part of the map - unfortunately you already had a ship at one of the planets, so you where able to keep the webfield somewhat at bay :(
Any time you feel like doing a blitz I'm ready - it has been very interesting to fight the feds as the crystals.
If it wasn't for that ion storm, I'm certain I would have won this game. I had so much minesweeping power and I was preemptively taking our all your webs. I also had so much firepower to kill those Diamond Flames. But when the ion storm came everything changed. All my HPs were useless, I couldn't move a single ship or resupply any of them with fuel. And this would have gone on for ten more turns. Absolutely ridiculous.
You deserve to win though because you knew how to take great advantage of the ion storm. Good luck on the final!
Which turn did we have a meteor strike? I went through all the turns and didn't get a message for anything happening, so it didn't really impact me either way. I didn't really think much of the ion storm initially since it was class 1 (harmless). In retrospect that was anything but harmless -- gigantic radius and slow-moving.
can't remember which turn the meteor struck, but since it didn't affect any of us, I guess it doesn't matter ;)
When I noticed the storm getting closed, I started moving torps southwards, so I could pump my three fields - I was actually wondering why you didn't use all that money of yours to pump out some 150 LY normal minefields, it would have hampered me a bit I think.
Yeah, I should have gotten more mines. But it wouldn't have done much anyways -- there was just nothing I could do about webs in the storm and I would have still been unable to move anything.
@turrsi: As indicated, the finalists are jobo and jkovalainen. More details can be located on my web site.Anyway the races have been revealed for Game 1. Jkovalainen will be playing Fascist while Jobo will be playing Crystalline.
I've created a game for us - join and check the map. If you find yourself stuck in some obscure corner of the map, say so and we will reshufle the map.
I'll be out whole Saturday and most of Sunday, so I can't make the one turn per day deadline. Let's begin only on Sunday, if you don't mind - I'll join the game when I'm back in business.
Hey yellowbrick, I'm having super refit bugs again. I did a super-refit and my torpedo tubes disappeared... I'm going to pause the game until an admin takes a look at it.
After a week of downtime, I finally received a racial selection from jkovalainen. Now I only need one from jobo, so that we can begin game 4 of the Grand Finals.
As usual, I will reveal the selections once both players have decided.
Could we pause the game, I cannot see any minefields (I get minescan messages in the message part of the game, but on the map I see nothing). It makes playing the game very hard :(
I've reported the bug - and I've just tested in a another browser on another computer, same issue, so it's not whatever plugins I have on my main browser.
I can see minefields in my other games, but in this blitz game my ships can scan 2 minefields (seen in the messages), but they are not visible on the map :(
Allies are limited... but friends in the cluster is unlimited?
so why dont we in god's year 2012, we go what we got? No alliances, no allied friendly codes. no shared vision etc. sh1t.
And lets put some picking order in here.
Kovalainen... Missä olet murusein http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtKhhaeBq50

@warthog44: Yes. This tournament is still running. Due to the number of brick walls it has endured, this tournament has lasted considerably longer than I anticipated it to.
When I assisted in Blitz Tournament 0008, it only took a couple months for the tournament to be concluded. This tournament has already lasted nearly three times as long as a result of the above problems.
Tournament breaking problems include, but are not limited to:
Secondary players being limited to the Lizards, necessitated a temporary tournament pause until it was fixed
Super Refits sometimes malfunctioning, necessitating a temporary game pause
Sometimes torpedo tubes (Mark VII in particular) not being taken out of the stock whenever they are used in a ship assembly
You have magical minefields, I've hit every single one you've laid, and I'm only flying 10-20 LY while cloaked... the chance of hitting a mine should be what, 10-15% max, and all my ships done it so far.
Ah well, I'll just keep throwing dark wings at you, eventually one of them will get through your minefields ;)
That ion storm has been the bane of me for the last few turns, so I'm glad that your finally suffering under it as well... let us see what the game brings once it has passed
"aaargh this one never ends. If only had i had more torpedos on my Nova!
What happens next? ;)"
I come to your place for sauna, lets take few beer and lets talk about VGAP strategies :)
Your buying ofcourse.
I really thought I had you when my swift confirmed that you where out of one of the minerals, and I had just build a dark wing, but I guess you managed to scrounge up enough moly to build that merlin and pump out some battleships.
after we lost all our ships (with the exception of my MDSF) I thought I'll try to build a Merlin just for the military score. Then I realized I might need it for something else as well :)
good games indeed, with quite an epic finale. Very well played with the Birds, that one could've gone either way with less luck on my side.
I think my greatest mistake was attempting to take your HW with a single Dark Wing. The turn that we lost all of our ships, I could have kept the DW above your HW, ensuring that you would not be able to build any more ships, while I slowly rebuild my fleet - instead I attacked your HW, hoping that you had not fighters (going for the quick win, rather than the long drawn out victory). Super Spy really need to tell you the base stats as well ;)
Oh well, definitely the best beating I've had in a long time.
