To make sure I understand the primary/secondary race choices... You always use the primary in the first game of each match, but are free to use either for the rest of the games?

Yes. Race switching is permitted, but not required, in between games, and that the primary race must be used in the first game of each pairing

The link to the Blitz setup is located in the first post, boldfaced.

This is the link for those using the updated activity feed: Breakthru the 4th dimension

Six (6) players have already signed up as of this reply, three new, and three returning

CSY,

Perhaps I am being unclear.
On the page link, it mentions being familiar with Nu's blitz mechanics.
That's what I am looking for as I don't see that information on the link above.

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply

Thanks for answering Bane's concerns, Turssi. I've clarified that point in the regulations.

Regarding other questions, LP stands for ladder points, a separate ranking system I use for these tournaments.

Most pairings are best of three (Bo3). Only the semi-finals (Bo5) and winner's finals (Bo7) deviate from this. While you are required to use your primary race in the first game of each pairing, you are allowed (but not required) to switch your race selection for the remainder of the pairing.

Depending on the interface used, your opponent may or may not know your selection. Nu Version 2 (the ancient interface) does not hide racial information, and is the reason I require the winner to host each subsequent game in a pairing. Nu Version 4 appears to hide it, but I don't have definitive information that it's reliable.

@csy: How long do you expect the tournament to last (after you get 32 participants all lined up that is)?

If I remember correctly the last one had fewer participants and took various months?

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
Assuming all goes well, I estimate 0029 to last between four and seven months.

0008 took only a mere two months, but every pairing was a Bo3, with only a single 2-1 result. 0013 lasted six months, but it was heavily plagued by glitches, including a glitch that necessitated a week-long freeze.

Subconsciously, we should realize that we are beta testing the Nu version 4, but so far it seems quite solid. I hope it stays that way

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply

@coldsteel: LP in this context stands for Ladder Points, used in an independent ranking as shown: http://sites.google.com/site/csplanets/legacy/hof

Calculations are pretty simple. The more opponents you defeat in a single tournament, the greater the earnings. This especially becomes noticeable upon defeating a third or any subsequent opponent as the LPs double for each win in a tournament. In short, the formula is 2^n, where n equals the number of wins in a tournament.

Third places are an exception towards this rule. Securing third place results in a 50% increase compared to what you would otherwise earn at fourth place

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
For the time being, I currently provide a bracket template containing seed numbers. As for how I seed, I currently organize players by their "account rank", and then I will do some shuffling within each rank.

Due to the large height of the bracket, I've split it, along with the player list, into its own page: http://sites.google.com/site/csplanets/legacy/tournaments/breakthru4/bracket

Indeed, the originally slated goal of 32 was never reached, even after five months of signups. This was record-breaking compared to previous tournaments which had filled up their 16 within the week.

I'll consider this to be a lesson to not offer another 32 bracket until I see a considerably high demand for organized play.

I repeat: You said not many days ago that perhaps you will consider 16. Casual observance would suggest more than 16 have responded to say they are still in. Nonetheless, can you give some indication of how many players are still in.

Logic would dictate that if you wait too long, there does come a point where you will lose as many (or more) as you incrementally gain. Time moves on, people's interest moves on.

Do you mind responding to how many you have currently, so I can make an informed decision.

I appreciate the time and effort you are putting into making this happen, but there comes a time....

Thanks Lord Helmet. 17 it is then. If the aim is still for 32, i'm a goner. Just a few weeks ago we thought we were about two shy of our 32. This illustrates my point above. Suggest that you aim for 16. If no-one else drops out, I will do so (although I really prefer to play), just so you have exactly 16 and can make a start.

@Big+Beefer: Yes, this is the way past blitz tournaments were handled.

Unfortunately, because of the way the newer interface works, the option to make your blitz game private (to prevent unwanted matchmaking) was ditched, so you may still encounter random opponents whom choose to start a blitz game from the ancient interface.

If Joshua was to prevent the blitz option from being selectable from the ancient interface, this would be less of a problem.

Calbasi,

We all saw them as that link was posted here.  I think it is OK as I'm guessing that this link was posted AFTER we all made our choices.

As I understand it, you must use your first race choice in game 1, as do I.  So I must play the Liz and you must play the Feds.  After that, either of us can play one of the two race choices we posted.

Host, please correct me if any of this is incorrect as this is my first time playing in this format.

I found the race choices everyone made to be interesting... particularly how the lack of need for real logistics has tossed 3 of the traditional "power" races to the curb. No Privateers, borg, or colonies!

I crunched some numbers, if your interested (I counted players who only picked a primary race as having chosen that race twice):

Another difference is that you are on your own, there are no others to ally with or trade ships with.  Therefor you need to pick a race that can stand on its own quite well.  The Priv and Borg are indeed powerhouse races but they both, for different reasons, really need a good wingman race.  Both of these races have a lot to offer/trade in standard games.   The Colonies are strong but have no good way to deal with cloakers.

The birds don't usually rank high but in this format their ability as a sudden surprise home world killer fleet can't be ignored.  Xtals and Bots are royal pain in the backside to attack.  Xtlas more so but the bots also bring big ships to the party.  Feds are rolling in cash, can get their tech up fast and have some nice larger mid sized ships.  I'm not sure that retrofit matters as there is essentially no ship limit.  Liz have a strong economy and my favorite, ground assault.  I see these races as being the more self sufficient races in the game.

Everyone in the blitz tournament should be feeling the affects of the recent change to less minerals on the ground (but roughly the same over all). One thing to note when playing your game is that when you look at the game page you can see the average amount of each mineral that exists on a given map. The mineral bar graph now shows the average in thousands for that mineral. 1.0 would be an average of 1000 of that mineral on each planet in the game, 0.8 would be an average of 800 per planet.

One question I do have - we are creating the blitz games in the normal place for blitz game creation, yes? The only reason I haven't created a game prior to now, was no reply from Joe and not certain whether that was the right place, and concerned if it was that a casual member of the public would join the game instead of Joe.

Hi Turssi, good first leg of the match!

You'll have to give your Rebel captains a crash course in navigating through minefields... a couple (un)lucky mine hits was definitely the difference in that game.

I can create the second leg of the match. But first a quick question in blitz etiquette:

When I created the blitz game, it immediately took me into the main dashboard and started my turn - where I could of course see my starting position.

If I was inclined, I could repeatedly cancel and create games until I had a starting position that suited me (e.g., a Birdmen intending to do a quick first strike could ensure himself a starting position close to the middle of the map).

Am I doing anything incorrectly (I went to Game List -> Blitz -> Start Game)? Is there a way to guarantee that the game's starting positions are truly random?

For example, if starting a blitz game didn't automatically take you to the dashboard, then your turn would be marked as "not looked at" (shaded white), and a joining opponent would see this and know that the starting positions are truly random.

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
Good question as something similar bothered me.

I seen some maps that are unwinnable given 2 roughly equal opponents. Imagine a pear shape map where HW is on one side with only 2-3 warp 9 reachable planets and all other planets clustered very closely on the other side (i.e most reachable by warp 5 or 6) on the other side.

VK and I handled it differently-we just offered each other a restart on turn 1 if it looked really unbalanced.

One good way I see to handle this without making to many rules is to allow up to 2 restarts per round (i.e 3 games).

This is the third time I've witnessed this concern. As per one of my off-screen discussions, if I could host a blitz game without actually taking one of the two slots, there would be no need to add a regulation limiting map scumming (which would be nearly impossible to enforce anyway).

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
It would be good if we could only make one game and invite the other person in eliminating the option to make many games and find one that has an advantage. I assume that no one here is doing that but sooner or later someone will.

If both sides agree to a restart then all is well. :-)

Otherwise, if both don't agree, then players should simply play the hand they are dealt. It is best of 3 so that helps reduce the role of bad luck from the final results. After all, bad luck comes in many forms, starting position is just one of them. Ion storms is one that seems to haunt me. In any case, great players find ways to deal with problems and a small subset of not so good players are brilliant at coming up with an endless stream of plausible excuses.

A best of 3 eliminates a lot of the randomness.

You might be waiting a while. . . This isn't going to end anytime soon.

Sure I have lots of ships but some of them are hissers safely secured in the back ranks. . .

Meanwhile the Feds did what I did, they built a lot of bases, so we now both have stationary "carriers". This makes attacking planets for either side that much harder.

The Feds also have done an excellent job of spreading their pop out which makes ground assault a lot less effective.

I still think I'll eventually prevail - but my opponent seems to think the same thing! Who knows who is right?

What I do know is that this battle isn't going to end anytime soon! And has been a lot of fun. Kudos to the host and participants in this series.

@Valahalla: No problem, take your time. I'm busy with my nightmares. It's interesting that even a 16-planets match can become a war of attrition. Especially in the light of the recent discussion about ship limit and pbp. You are actually playing without ship limit and pbp don't matter and despite of this a stall-like situation occurs.
I'm sure this is fun, enjoy.

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
I think the pattern also has to do with our play styles. There is some attrition but there are also various attacks back and forth that are close to evenly matched.

He just took out a newly built and still vulnerable front-line SB of mine. Drat! I just picked off some ships from his most distant and "secure" planet. . .

I think a ship limit helps force an end - perhaps not to my advantage since his big ship is much bigger than mine. Then again, I have more PBPs so if we had a scaled down ship limit I'd get more builds.

I'm not totally sure but I believe I won round 1.

While it would have been some time before I got to 90% given his 4 starbases and the cost to take them out, I've hit 70% military score and am able to pick off Calbasi's ships at will. I can kill his Missouri's with no ship losses and can take out his big boy for the price of a warp 1 T-Rex. I was also at the point where I can eliminate most Fed mine fields in a turn or two.

It looks like Calbasi missed his turn. I don't actually know if that was intentional or not. What I know for sure is that the game is over as I received a host message saying it was and I won.

Calbasi, can you please confirm this? I'd hate for the game to end if you didn't want it to. But I do think I have you in that instance.

In the mean time, game 2 is already started. . .

- I have no spare time, due my work

Then, I decided resign ;-)

What? Does this mean that you cannot do fast turns anymore (do your next turn as soon as both players are done)?

Anyway, Colo vs Lizard was a lizard massacre. Compined colonial mines with a early virgo to sweep enemey mines and lose of the lizard hw in T11.

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
I resigned the game. Sorry about that, I didn't realize the game would be deleted. It would have been interesting to review it from the other side.

Unfortunately, I didn't do the Lizards justice in that game. I made two terrible mistakes.

1) When you took that 8 million Boivanoid planet near your homeworld. I had a LCC with 270 clans in orbit. I had just taken the planet the turn before. But with your Virgo coming I meant to load all but one of the clans back on the LCC, then keep beaming them down to prevent you from owning the planet. But for some stupid reason I only beamed up 10 of the clans, your Virgo killed the other 260, and my LCC in orbit was useless. I'm not sure what your other 3 planets were like, but I'm guessing the Bovi planet was critical :)

2) You may have wondered why that TRex chased after your Cobol and didn't return back to defend my HW from your Virgo (I was one TRex short of killing the Virgo).... I set it to intercept the Cobol, but didn't load enough fuel for it to get back to my HW :(

By the way Ted, that was an excellent aggressive move on your part to attack my HW. I didn't even bother to boost my HW defenses because I thought your Virgo wouldn't be able to make it all the way. Were they tech 6 engines?

The other thing that hurt be that game was lack of MC. In the 8 planets closest to my HW, my only natives were 3 million Avian pre-tribal. I couldn't afford the beam tech to boost my sweeping power.

So don't get over confident Ted. The next Lizard player you run into will be a lot better than your last!

Looks like you've got a good wait before the semi-final, so if you want some Colo-Liz practice matches, I'll give you a better game!

Andy:
I think the only good tactic against a lizard in a blitz is to lay mines to slow/stop the movement and attack fast because the more time passes the more difficult it will be to compensate the hiss+mining rate of the lizard. Your raised in T9 a second SB and this was the trigger for me to attack your homeworld. I could not be 100% sure to find your hw with the first try but i could track you waypoints of your cruiser over this boivanoid planet so only 2 planets could be your hw. So my warp6 virgo just suck 300 fuel to move with warp8 and made it. But yes, i was surprised that only one virgo was needed. I thought i will kill all your trex and support ships with the first try. But i did build second virgo in T9 and merlin in T11 so i was sure get you down because i had already another bovi planet even if it was not need to use it finally.

@Figak:
I not want to be a fault-finder here. But I checked your game and find 2 big mistakes in your game play.

1. you played the blitz like a normal game. Heading with alot of ships warp7 to 64 lj planets to safe fuel is wrong here. You waste alot of colonizing time with this.

2. You build to late disruptor sweep ships and your birdmen first ship should be disruptor darkwing and no plasma resolute. The fed can only with big casualties counter a darkwing in the first 10 turns and Joshua build in all his games only a fleet of nebulas so far.

Just my 2 cents about this :)

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
Cheers @TED for the feedback, yes the 1st game was full of mistakes. I wasn't expecting such aggressive early moves.

The 2nd was less worse, but still bad, a lack of thought on duranium logistics cost me the game. THe game was going to be fine if I could get the 2 bovi planet and the 99% duranium to feed home. Having less planets made it easier in a way, in my 1st game it took me too much time to find the jewel planets.

Now I think having something stronger/earlier to simply counter the fields, a white/fearless with phasers would have done the trick parked in the middle of the map cloak-sweep-cloak the entire game. Then DW pairs all over the place, shame Reso just doesn't cut the butter, relearning the limits of my favorite ship.

I'm not used to the blitz format, but took the opportunity of the tournament to play some. Shame I missed the window when I had some proper time to play. Once I am down to 2 games (instead of current 4 - my personal maximum), I will train my blitz skills some more.

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
Beefer takes the second game vs. ColdSteel to move on to the next round. Tough fights, Fed against Robot, well met sir!

A couple asides...

1. If you can coordinate achieving 90% military the same turn your opponent drops, you will actually (according to .nu) win the game twice! I received 2 emails each boosting my blitz score a little more. In fact, in this first round of the tournament, I have managed to accrue 5 wins.

2. I think with the minerals change, races that need a lot of duranium, either for hulls or for sweep-worthy beams, have it tough. Since the homeworld mineral densities are pretty much standard with 15% for duranium, no one (except lizards maybe) can build a duranium hungry fleet without having to locate and bring back more. The other minerals can be extracted at the HW much more quickly, so do not create such a pinch point.

Valhalla vs. Calabasi - Game 2 Update
Turn 28

This game could continue for some time more unless my opponent chooses to tip his King. Here is where we are now:

I own 14 planets, Calabasi owns 0. The unowned ones are Amorph. I took out his HW a few turns ago. Unless he has a fleet of web mine immune darkwings over my homeworld, this game has been over for some time. . .

But. . .

I have "only" 80k military score, Calabasi has 30k in cloaking ships and ships (including a refinery ship) playing warp well games. So I'm not near the 90% needed to win and may not be for some time.

Calabasi is a quick study and is now making an art of the warp well dance. Kudos for that! As someone that likes to annoy my opponents, I fully respect and admire these moves.

Still, this game has been over for some time. 0 planets. No homeworld. . . Warp well moves only delay the inevitable when you have no planets. My space is web mined like Fort Knox. My HW can take on a darkwing or three.

At this time I would like to take the opportunity to once again state my opinion on military score: it is overly complex and it sucks. We got rid if it from main games and we should dump it from Blitx games as well.

The name of the game is planets and without any, your goose is cooked.

In the mean time, I shall continue to flog a dead horse, repeatedly. Every turn. Again and again. Until I get to 90% or he chooses to tip his King. This is not much fun and isn't challenging.

I really do enjoy these poly tick free 1 on 1 Blitz games. And give Nu huge credit for saving the online strategy game I've played by far the longest. But I wish we could have a winning conditions that didn't force players to continue to play far beyond when a clear winner is apparent.

Your mileage may vary.

LOL Thanks for the support. Since we are holding the tourney up, I figured I'd pose a status report.

Sure Calbasi can tip his King but he has already done that in our first game. Even if he chooses to do that again, that really isn't my point.

My point remains that military score is problematic. When someone has 0 planets there just is no recovery from that, nor is it much fun to continue to play against them and continue to rub their noses in it.

LOL As for the charge of the light birdgade, that is very hard to do in an echo cluster full of webmines. . .

At least there are Ghipsodal women to play with. . .

Let the record show that Valhalla is the true Lizard King and is playing as such, as his first choice race. You, sir, are a Rebel. A Rebel with an impressive nice new big ship! Let the record show that no self respecting Lizard would hide behind such a monstrosity unless it was gained though trades or as spoils of war.

-V-

@ Calbasi

Good games! I've already surrounded your forces for you. Anyway, you learn very quickly, especially warp well fun and games. Anyone that plays the birds has the potential to hide a heck of a lot of military score in advanced cloakers in warp wells and pick off freighters as they like. Calbasi made an art of this.

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
I can give you a synopsis though I didn't get to see the turn either. Emork built a Rush on turn 1 as expected. But he must have also moved his medium deep toward me with some more fighter building materials. He advanced the Rush on turn 2 at warp 8 to a planet between us with about 58 fighters and then with the goods from the medium deep was able to make about twenty more giving 78. On turn 3 he advanced again at warp 8 and unfortunately arrived at my key money planet on turn 4 killing my mdsf in the process and effectively eliminating my chances of victory.

I had already laid some mines but he flew through them untouched and while I was able to get 3 missouries up he hit my homeworld on turn 6 and I didn't have the torps yet to defeat the Rush and since he arrived on RGA my colonists were rioting and I had no remaining chance to earn the necessary cash to build them. So I resigned after just 6 turns.

There is no doubt in my mind this is a fearsome Rebel blitz well executed by Emork. I was actually quite prepared for the attack from some simulations I ran before hand, but I thought it would take at least 2 more turns before he would get to me. But he saved a turn with that great mdsf move and unfortunately on this map we were pretty close! The next battle will be very interesting.

These blitz games are good fun but a straight out rush at the enemy is often the winning strategy. Emork is damn good at this!

This format often removes the economic part of the game. I'd really like to see a more serious 1 on 1 game with 50 to 100 planets - a game where both econ and military strategy would apply. A game where strategies other than a straight on rush would have more of a chance to thrive.

Qquasar gave up in our second game. Because it's already deleted, a short summary: Big minefields that couldn't stop 3 pillages on the very remote Robot HW. 4 Amorphous planets (that I know of). 4 Automas (if I counted correctly), one of them died against a Vicky - Merlin - D19 combination (yes, in this battle order). It's so hard to find a way against the Robots as the Fascists - let's see what the last game brings.

The 3 match: (Colonial vs Rebel)
http://planets.nu/#/sector/80998 - running at T30, each 50% military. At least i was able to choose a map with a worse duranium ratio to make it more difficult for him :)

Observers recently asked me about the incredible low Duranium rate of this game which is 0.24. Before I had only noticed that you shuffeled until you got a map that is very helpful against my strategy. I accepted it but said I hadn't taken a look at the mineral ratios. Now I know why you denied to to handle it like me and my opponents in the previous rounds - take the first map.

Well, knowing this makes me more satisfied with the current undecided fight. :)

Well, Emork. A good player should be able find all time a way to counter a great stategy. In the current blitz settings there exist on my view only this ways to stop your rebel rush attack. Really low duranium , homeworld distance as far as possible.

But you still took the initiative from the beginning and wasted with your rebel ground attack my main money planet already. All depends now on your and my supplies production. But i fear i need a great luck based victory in the next 10 turns. I would like to offer you a draw for this match here to enter the 4th match :)

Hmm, we need some way to save and archive such games outside planets.nu.
Maybe at planetsmag?
I saw there is a tool called NuReplay which includes preprocecced turns from the championship matches Scorpius-,Taurus-,Sagittarius War.
Is there any attempt to do the same for the blitz tournament?

Like Lord Helmet said, most games have already been deleted (as a result of when both players remove their game from their lists), but you can still check the history.

I have refitted my local build of Nu Replayer to add custom game support, so that I can integrate some of these epic blitz games (such as Ted vs. Emork games 2 and 3) into Nu Replayer, and then watch the fireworks from there.

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
JK asked me about other things that might have helped him against the robots. One thought I had about the fascists, I don't mind sharing publicly, since there are no more in the tournament...

The thing I was most afraid of I think, was early glory device strikes to my homeworld. I was thinking something along the lines of using vickies to tow them close (since you have to get through the mines), then releasing them to pop on my HW, Figuring it would have the following effects:

- Hurting the economy of the HW by killing off colonists, and destroying some structures I wouldn't be able to rebuild (since I have less colonists now)
- Causing me to keep a defensive carrier at my base or else be pillaged by the vickie.
- Force me to move any Q Tanks off the base, slowing down fighter production.
- Make me think twice about bringing in my mdsf, or any Q Tanks out gathering resources, again hitting my economy.
- Using pairs of glories would also risk me losing any cats paws or ldsfs at the base as well.

So when we started our second game, that was the move I was afraid of seeing, and why I was glad you took the lizards. Now I haven't actually taken the time to see if it's feasible, but it would have likely slowed down my development, especially if used early. Even just bluffing at it by towing a popper into range would have had an effect as I scrambled to try and keep things safe.

Also, the sabre would have been the choice here, as it has the advantage of being able to take a mine hit and still get to it's target. Sabres towing D19s would have been even better.

Anyways, that was my theory on how the fascists might be able to take the robots. But who knows if it would have worked in practice?

@Joe and BB/Azzazello: The game of Joe and QQausaR is unaccessible just 30 minutes after I have recieved the info that it ended. I assume this was not intentional. It seems that if a player RESIGNS then the game vanishes. Joshua is aware of this bug because it also occured in our duell.
It would be nice if the semi-final games would be availlable a bit longer. If you don't want to play until 90% military you could start the next game and just wait one, two days before resigning the previous one.

Congratulations with you victory Azzazzello.

If you don't mind I would prefer to have a random map for the semi-finals, as I don't have to make a lot of considerations.

The best/only way to create just one random map is to set a date and a time and then create the game as a public game for the other player to join.

I look forward to play against you.

I like the idea of Joe how to create the random map. I'd be glad if we use this method in the final.

CSY, for further tournaments you could consider defining the process. I had some discussions about this during the tournament. It depends on the races and strategies how important the map design is.
An alternative would be that each player is officially allowed to generate a map that suits him. A coin flip has to decide who may start. This means that the battle begins with map generation. That's not bad in general - it allows for some interesting considerations.

I fully agree, CSY. Just in case we don't have this option for the next tournament then using a fix creation time is a good workaround. I thought about the problem when I realized that Ted is fine-tuning the map against my strategy (no complaint, I did the same afterwards - is kind of fun) but didn't find this simple solution.

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
Thanks Emork, I will definitely let you from my experience but using pure theorycraft I think Robots by far.

The main challenge facing Robots is the amount of things you have to deal with in first 6 turns.

1. You need to find a way to counter giant minefield that covers planets you need to develop (fail to do that and you have economy and the game is lost before it is started)
2. You need to be able to counter 2 Automas with 60 fighters each hitting your outer colonies.
3. Find a way to go on offense as sitting back you will lose as Robots pack bigger punch (this is where I hurt the most against Joe)

The amount of MCs needed in fist few turns is staggering especially if you going to use Madazillas.

Colonies are easier. virgo might be a bit tougher than Automa but you don't need to worry about gigantic minefields and can go on offense as soon as he.

My gut is telling me that Rebels would be easier for Lizards than Robots.

@Purebloodprince I was actually going to ask the opposite - do Crystals ever win blitz games? Crystals was my back up race which I never used.

I just don't see what tools they have that can be effective in Blitz. Webs require strong economy and their ships are so expensive. Most decent players would build a HD/HP capital ships and tow them into HW - there is very little Crystal can do.

I will admit that I have not played them or faced them in Blitz but I just don't see them having the speed or tools needed to succeed

Yep, cannot really see crystals as a strong Blitz race - you'd require extremely good start BUT then again with good start most races are even better :)

I won 12 in a row :)

Apparently I just did not play good players :)

I have resources for a big web to start with, which usually completely messes up enemy's economy. Unfortunately it affects my economy as well, I have hard time, nevertheless I can build a few more freighters next few turns. Usually that's enough to get some resources from nearby planets while the enemy deals with the web, which, if I play vs Robot, Rebel or Colonies, can be scooped before him. He has much harder time to colonize any nearby planet, and that is usually enough.

Concerning viability of Crystals: They have about a 55% win rate in the public realm, more if there was a way to weed out mirror games.

What is so surprising about Crystals? They are my go-to race for Blitz. They have a versatile fleet that can simultaneously handle military and economic demands thanks to cargo capacity, and of course, Webs.

There seems to be some other small issues regarding the public data I gathered, but I cannot seem to discern if it is the API file, or if it is my local program.

Yeah CSY, I didn't like to lose this game but I also think it's good that stone-paper-scissors is still working. Against the Bots it feels a little bit uphill for my Rebels.

I wanted to resign but knew that the game would vanish if I do. So I declared defeat to Joe and we made fast turns while I unloaded the fighters from my starbase and recycled/disassembled my ships. So Joe scored the military victory quickly. That's a workaround until the resign-bug is fixed.

I apologize in advance to Emork but I have a few comments!

1. Uphill battle?!? This whole tournament felt like an uphill battle playing Lizards against fighter races. I have nightmares of fighter waves coming at me because of it.

2. Sorry, I have to cheer for Joe - he has to win, that way I can use Ville K. logic and say that I got knocked out by a champion :)

In all seriousness good luck :) I do think that the 2 best made it to the finals.

Azzazzello vs Ted : 1 - 1

A important planets rule was confirmed again.

Never give up even if things look worse! In my case it looked bad as Colonial with only a 32% core main Tritanium source around the homeworld against a fast lizard.

After a T40 Blitz and looking into Azzazzello match i have to say that a Bovonoid Planet did safe me and that Azz did not found the time to build factorys to feed his late builded merlin. And of course that lizards all time lose in fleet battles! :)

Thin, read my PM. I think you did not unterstand the flow of events and that referee number 2 completly reversed the decision of referee number 1.
For me all kind of decisions are acceptable. I explicitly said that I do not question the authority of the tournament host. All I do is adjusting my reaction.

Sidenote: Talking about exploits and "what makes sense or is quirky" is futile. Many lengthy discussions have shown that this is totally subjective. My conclusion is that if I make my turn with the client only and I do not use any new and unknown bugs (that would be fixed immidialy if made public) then it is a valid turn. The tow-drop-chunnel is a good example. I was happy when it was removed and even argued to remove it but as long as it was part of the game I never accused a player who used it that he does WRONG. Ridiculous idea!

I think Emork did the right thing. I don't really get what's going on here, because the referee comparison is incorrect here. To stay in Thin's methaphor the referee (/check for winner module) decided the game was won by Emork (yes, with a Wembley goal). But FIFA/CSY decided to nullify the game. I was not aware that the games within this tournament had different rules than outside. Thus leaving the tournament is the right choice for Emork.

I’m slightly annoyed by having to participate in this discussion in the activity feed, as I explicitly mentioned to Emork in a PM that it would not be in the interest of the blitz tournament or the NU website.

As there is no definitive correct answer is discussion may continue for a long time and I don’t wish to be part of such a long-lasting discussion.

IMHO, CSY made a brave and correct decision that will prove to be the best for the blitz tournament and the NU website in time, unless you wish for both be controlled by a handful of meta-gamers and their followers.

The final is over for me and I congratulate Emork with a well deserved second place. Perhaps he will get a chance for a rematch if CSY decide to host another tournament in the future.

I wish to say thank you to CSY for hosting and to all my opponents for some very exciting games.

Amen. Now that Joe has declared himself king we can close this chapter.

Many thanks to CSY for organizing this tournament. It was a great experience. Be assured that I respect your decision and have no hard feelings. I hope you can accept my reaction in the same way.
Also many thanks to all my opponents until the final. Exciting and intense games!

I want to mention that my good success in this tournament was mostly founded on preperation. It was my first blitz experience and in my inital test game I was surprised how small the map is. So I had the idea that an extreme blitz attack (means without economy) could work. I tried out different races and calculated which race can build the most firepower in turn one, two and three. The Rebels won because of the just-6-engines-Rush's large cargo hold for building fighters quickly and the specific mineral costs of the Rush which allowed to build a second Rush in turn 3. Additionally the Rebels can ignore the strong defense of the homebase and at the same time attack it with RGA. The Falcons are great to meet the attacking Rushs mid-way to bring more fighter minerals or supplies (against mine hits). I found that in some matchups you still don't win by firepower but by RGA. Therefore it's crucial to deal the RGA two times on the homeworld. You can achieve this in different ways but depending on the situation the long intercept is the best/only way. I had it on my mind since the beginning but if I remember right I never had to use it before the final. My second race choice - Lizards - was primarily against Pirates.
I was a bit worried when - after my race choice was locked in - Joshua reduced the average minerals. That could have spoiled my considerations. If the second Rush doesn't come quick then Rebels are not the best choice. I was relieved to see that the homeworld starting minerals were not changed. All in all my plan worked as expected. In many games the blitz attack was succesfull and if not I could switch to economy mode. I had ignored economy in my first turns but my attack forced my opponent to do the same. If he didn't then his defense was too weak and I RGAed his homeworld or totally ruined his nearby planets. So if he sucessfully defended against my blitz attack we both started in economy mode on the same level.
Don't think Rebels are an auto-win. The close matches against Ted's Colonies show this and against Robots it's even worse. They have two Automas and a full base ready when your pair of Rushs arrive. In this matchup you have to play the RGA-card.

-----

P.S. for Joe: Not all that don't share your opinion are meta-gamers (whatever this means for someone who calls for a meta-game authority when he loses) and their followers. Could be that they are just commited players with their own opinion.

*sigh*

It's a bit problematic for me to comment here, since I consider myself a good friend of Emork, but after sleeping over it for a day, I feel reasonably sure that my answer would be the same if it had been anybody else.

Having the GM judge any kind of move as "illegal" (!) that NU allows already feels like a bit of a stretch. There is no logical reason why it should be illegal (first move, then intercept), and NU already has several other known and widely accepted differences to Timhost. Therefore, annulling the game feels a bit harsh to me, but it's within the authority of the GM.

Personally, I'd have preferred if Emork had continued and replayed the game instead of bowing out in protest. Likewise, I'd have preferred if Joesnoffy had shown a more gracious reaction to it - protesting a highly debatable GM call is the least thing Emork is entitled to, and combining that with an uncomprising insistence to have won essentially boils down to "Shut up, I've won, and don't you dare to publicly complain".

However, I know that playing competitively does get one's blood raging very quickly. I know firsthand from the Nightmare Invitational that even with the best intentions, GMs can quickly end up in situations where there is no solution which satisfies all players. In the future, when I am GM, I'll try to be as minimally invasive as possible. Let's keep "bugfixing" to Joshua, any other interference very quickly reeks of arbitrariness.

Oh my! I feel terrible that I pointed out that tactic which in some convoluted way ended this great series! And even worse that I have accidentally driven a wedge between Joe and Emork, both great players and good allies from games past!
That was absolutely not my intent!

My opinion on this one is clear: Fight with the game rules as it plays. That's a GREAT tactic, employed in GRAND fashion.
I don't even see it as a deficiency in the rules to be honest. I sure as hell want to intercept Spacequad's little creation.

I know the stress levels in these intellectual championships is sky high, I still twitch occasionally from Taurus war, but really you 2 should fight it out, one last time. If not for the record, then off the record.

Not commenting on the specific "tactic", tournament, referee actions or individual people.

I have just one comment, despite all the nice words, none of the top players don't like losing no matter what is said.

I am not sure I consider myself a top player yet, but I still hate losing and when things do not go my way. I may get irritated, frustrated, crabby, start to complain, blame the host, want to throw in a towel and walk away and generally do things that normally I would not.

In those times, when (if) I catch myself doing that, I need to remind myself that this is a game, with a great community, take a week to cool or accept the situation and then re-evaluate the situation.

This post was not pointed at anybody in specific except me.

Well, I think it is time that I make a statement here after the flurry of activity and drama to end this tournament.

First off I would like to thank ChallengeSpaceYard for taking on the most difficult task of running this tournament which has raised the bar for Blitz play yet again and has grown to be one of the premier events on Planets Nu. His role is by far the hardest and he made a difficult decision. A tremendous amount was learned during this process. Thank you CSY for doing a great job!

As to the conclusion. I played a part in this messy conclusion. CSY asked for my advice regarding this event. I left this decision up to him with the following comment:

"As tourney director I leave the decision up to you on what you do with the game in regards to the tournament. I have deemed the ability to intercept beyond 200ly a deviation from the original and have decided to correct it to the original game to avoid exploits like this."

We all know the "rules" of a Planets game are poorly documented and even disagree with each other from one source to another. This is certainly an area we can improve on. This makes CSY's job even more difficult. For the future we will need to be more clear when hosting events like this on what is permitted or not.

In the end CSY decided to side with Donovans and nullify the game. In protest, Emork has decided to leave the tournament. Therefore, Joesnoffy is our winner! What a dramatic ending!

This is certainly not the way we all expected or hoped to see this grand tournament conclude. However, ours is not the first event to conclude in dubious fashion.

Without a doubt Joesnoffy and Emork the Lizard King were by far the two best contestants in this tournament. Joesnoffy was the first player to win a single game against Emork in the entire tournament. Who is truly the best will have to remain a mystery for now.

Congratulations to Joesnoffy! An official post and award ceremony will follow the completion of the consolation final between Azzazzello and Ted. With Emork leaving the tournament Azz and Ted are now playing for the 2nd and 3rd place prizes.

Once again. Thank you very much to CSY for doing an amazing job organizing and running the tournament. We are all looking forward to the next one.

PS. Regarding this specific bug fix of intercepting beyond 200ly. I am going to take a little more time to think about how or if we want to actually change it. After more time I remember reviewing WinPlan/Dosplan and realizing that it was not possible to intercept beyond 200ly because the UI did not allow it on smaller screens. This didn't seem like a reasonable reason to leave it out. So for now at least it is still in. Beware, and be aware that Emork could have done the same thing with any ship that is 82-84ly away and flying into the planets warp well (something I have done myself). It's a great move.

RE: Blitz Tournament 0029Write Reply
Greetings all,

After reflecting my decisions, I agree that Blitz Tournament 0029 has been extremely stressful. At the same time, I believe I may have NEEDED that rude awakening.

There were several escalating issues that contributed to the stress, and I believe most could have been avoided had I taken my time resolving them. Most notably, I should NEVER have expedited the resolution as soon as I informed both finalists that I had frozen the Finals. In short, I got greedy for time, and paid for it.

As per the statements made by my father in the game thread, I was wrong to nullify game two which was won by Emork. Despite Joshua's remarks, I still offer the Finalists two options. One, accept a 1-1 tie for a shared victory. Two, resume play at the 1-1 position. If they accept a 1-1 tie for the shared victory, then the Ladder Point awards will be as follows: Emork and Joe will each receive 20 LP.

I have also decided that this will be the last tournament for the season of 0008-004X (since I have no word the consolation ended yet), thus allowing Emork and Joe the option to share being king of the season, or to go the extra mile and finish off the Best of 7.

On a related note, Joshua's remarks also serves as a reminder that I should not give up simply because I made a screw up. Clearly, I still need to work on this weakness.

Hi CSY,

Although I don't blitz (more like I drunkenly stumble about and pray my knees won't give out), I think you ran a fabulous tournament. I believe you have the appreciation and respect of ALL NU PLAYERS. You are wiser with regards to art of communication (most docs that get sued do so not because of a patient mishap, far more commonly it poor communication)

Even after reading Joshua's post, I am not sure there is a right answer. If he said it is definitely a bug to be corrected I would make the personal choice to avoid the w0 intercept or long intercept to break tow maneuvers. If it is more a technological limitation of winplan that has been is working as intended, I would gladly use it.

In my humble opinion, you seem to have made a Solomon like choice.

Cheers and hats off to you,

MEGA

PS Joshua, great JOB with the site and latest updates.

Congratulations to all participants, and to Challengespaceyard for hosting this tournament, which clearly took a lot of time and hard work to run. I was too green when the tourney started, so I didn't join, but am looking forward to another blitz tournament, with hopes of joining.

For a tournament involving as much time and as many players as this one, it is impossible to assess all rule questions a priori. When they arise, it seems logical on the surface to ask the person who is hosting for their final judgment. However, it's actually quite unreasonable to ask the host, who is already sacrificing their time and energy, for little or nothing in return outside of the love of the game, to now deal with more headache and make a decision that will be controversial and invariably disagreed with by a significant portion of the community (whatever the result of the decision may be). The demands of tournament logistics weigh with the host against the ability to deliberate and discuss, and all the while emotions run high. Such a process often leads to quick decisions, but not necessarily a decision most thoroughly examined, and--in the eyes of some--an undeserved tarnishment of the reputation of a host who has already gone above and beyond for others to enjoy a game. Overall, an ineffective decision process with unfair ramifications for the host.

Tournaments that hold the scope of time and importance (tangible prize) of this one should have a judge committee. Three community members, announced and chosen before the start of the tournament. Preferably of high standing (Former emperors? > certain rank?). Preferably not players in the tournament, but with alternate judges available if they are. Preferably not programmers that build and/or maintain the site, such as Joshua; judges for a tourney should not have to worry how their decisions will lead to community expectations to change the structure of the game at large. Tourney rule questions and arguments for game nullifcation or forfeiture should then be put to the committee for (public?) argument and vote, and not to the hardworking host.

My suggestion of use of a committee for future tourneys in no way implies any personal judgment with regard to Challengespaceyard's particlar rules decision, or the related actions/reactions of any tourney participants.

Greetings all Nuniverse players,

I realized that I have not been overseeing progress on this tournament. These past few months have been extremely stressful. It is like by the time I want to post something here, my energy is depleted.

Anyhow, I would like to know what the status is of the consolation pair between Ted and Azzazzello. Last time I checked, the series is currently tied at 1-1. I would at least like to see this pairing finished with a player winning.

As for the finals, I am keeping them frozen for the time being. It's fate will be revealed when the consolation pairing is done.

I have just acquired some information, allowing me to reveal the fate of Blitz Tournament 0029. Considering the extreme stress I have endured, I am not surprised that some of the remaining players have lost interest as well.

If there ever was such a thing as TWO tied pairings, one for first, and one for third, this tournament is it! As troublesome as this may sound, at least I can prepare to wrap up this tournament and call it finished.

Stress and pitfalls aside, this has been an exceptionally fun tournament to oversee as there have been many surprises and much magnificent play.
