Since you no longer have access to rst files their is no offline information available to useful tools like EchoView. I use EchoView a lot, especially for its superb calculation of 'next-turn economics'. At the planets info screen, you can review structure decay, mining rates, income, natives and colonists status, etc. It even takes into account the effect of pillage and hiss missions.

It would be very nice and helpful to have a similar function in VGA Planets "NU".

I understand that this is not a feature of the original VGA Planets, but tools like EchoView exists and are used because it's features are missing in the original.

Keep up the good work!

I totally agree.  As "nu" develops we will be adding the informational features that systems like Echoview have been providing.

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply
after playing 2 testgames with nu i must admit that i am NOT able to play without echoview.
echoview provides so much infos at one view. "early strike" for example - now at turn17 - there is no fun for me to play any longer without echoview...it is real stress!! ;)

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply
well I would not go that far.  Echoview helps but it is what you do not see in echoview that can kill you.

I did us the battle vcr to test the order of ship attacks.  I think that was echoview but it has been 15 years.

I miss warp circles from Echoview. And I think that this is still more important to ships with Hyperjump hability.

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply

I was just about to post that.

In Echoview you can put warp circles on any planet (at the moment only on owned planets), the warp circles can be configured (normally I run warp 9 - and HYP if I have a HYP race).

Edit:  you could do this for two planets at a time (IIRC)

I am also wishing I could download an RST and view it on Echoview. But Joshua is new to it, so I think we can ask for the features that we are missing the most and take it step by step.

For me I miss two things: (4 test games so far)

1) The graphical overview in the starmap of minerals (mined/unmined/rate produced per turn).

2) The build simulator (so that you can see how many turns until you have what you want on a planet: facotries, mines, defenses but also minerals, credits etc)

I have yet to test how the UI behaves with mines, when I played cloaked races I loved to be able to see the % of hitting a mine and play the lottery with that.

i really like to see on what planets you have starbases!! that would simplify a lot.

and the graphical circles for minerals/money/supplies/natives/clans switching on and off as you like!!

these two things are the most importants echoview-views :)

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply

I'm playing Evil Empire in Rebirth4 and really miss the warp circles to plan my hyperjumps.

As a work around I use Echo View without RST information to do the planning.

(Yes, I've a virtual machine on my Mac that runs Windows XP to be able to use WinPlan and tools like Echo View. It's not very convenient, but as long as I play regular games, I'll stick to it.)

I can only agree that the VGA planets "NU" really need some of the functions of echo view and also some way to make planets build-up easier - like randmax

As it is now I cannot imagine playing a real game with many planets to control.

Best wishes

Hi Joesnoffy,

I'm not familiar with Randmax.  Could you tell me what that is and how it works?

Currently in Nu there is a "target" feature for factories, mines and defense.  This makes the process of managing your buildings pretty easy.  You just set the target and it will autobuild toward them.

Udpate: I just did some searching on Randmax.  I could see a couple of good features in there we can add.  Like auto adjusting tax rates.  The auto build targets do cover the same functionality for buildings.  So the first steps are there.

Maybe a system to allow players to get rst files could solve many problems.

If this is possible at all I don't know.

Best wishes,

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply
Yes, integrating EchoView functionality would be wonderful!
I would especially appreciate:
  • the "minefield simulation" (prediction) functionality
  • the recording of all collected ship information (sightings, movements, equipment, etc.)
  • the recording of all collected planet information (colonists, natives, temperature, minerals, buildings, etc.)
The vast amount of information and tools it provides is absolutely helpful (and missing in Planets itself).

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply
What might be useful here is to try to collate a priority list of functionality. There must be 100's of neat features that the NU guys are trying to implement. Some may be a few hours work, some may be weeks effort (or not even possible).

It may be useful if we started a list of top tens features that the community wanted adding. Once that list was collated it would give a clear guide to what most players wanted and then the team could comment back on plans or feasibility to implement them. Currently I don't think we are aware of whats in progress, whats planned and whats never going to happen.

If this sounds like a good idea then I think it has to be requested in an organised way (not random posts all over the forum or in random threads).

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply
Hi all,

I think adding a history feature like EchoView has would be a great step.  Coding wise, it might not be that difficult, but would allow people to easily keep track of where ships are/were.  It could also then be adapted to allow some predictions (like the the number of mines/factories at a planet next turn, minefield size, ship locations, etc.).  For me, this would be the #1 feature from EchoView to add.  Overall though, I think things are going in the right direction.  Thanks to all the devs on this.

Cheers,

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply
Hi!

I'm new in planets nu, but I have playing Vga planets for a looong time.

I'm going to miss Echoview a lot. I understand that your priority is to add new features to NU instead of developing backwards compatibilities as a .rst file. Later people will ask for the util.dat files, pconfig.src.. etc!

But in the present time, NU star map has serious lacks. Correct-me if some of them can be done, and I don't know how, but for example:

* See planet names in starmap
* Find for a planet by id or number.
* See connections between planets at warp 9 (or other)

I just ask for a file with the id's, name and coordinates of the planets. Then this info can be used in echoview to see the map and use it just as a blank notebook.

Thank you, and good job!

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply
I really would like to see a building task list added in the future. For example in Randmax you could set the factories to be built to 15 first, then build mines to 15, then def posts to 15, then max factories, then mines to 100, then def posts to 21. Currently in Nu it builds def posts to the target first, then factories and last mines. Randmax will relieve you from micromanaging the planets which will save hours...

By the way, it would be nice to see building targets in planet main view without opening building page. For example mines row would be something like: Mines 20/50 (+20) [50]. (+20) and [50] would be in light grey. Now you can easily see that you have 20 mines, 50 mines max, autobuild built 20 mines and 50 is the target.

That was a quick one. Cheers! Or was it there already... :) Oh well, the main thing is that we can see the building targets now without opening build-view.

Oh yes, I really like admiral_thrain's idea of the "building task list". That would be really helpful!

The current autobuild feature which allows you to set a "target" is just useless - at least for ambitious players (imho).

RE: EchoViewWrite Reply

Now we can see MANY of EchoView features on NU.  :0)

Some I still miss (but I can live without it):
- Map tool for amount of Clans, Money, Supplies and specially navites and his race. Right now we have this tool just for minerals
- Info about the right clans to drop on a planet (colonist needed to grow). Of course it depends in the race you are playing, so it may be a little hard to do.

The battle simulator was great but there are many websites where you add the ships data and it simulates the battle. Also they simulate planet development. Example:

200 days later...
Done:

  1. HYP Circles
  2. Warp 9 connections
  3. Mineral overview
  4. Build simulator (next turn anyways)
  5. Starbases
  6. Collected planet information
  7. Planet names

To be Done: (no particular order)

  1. Minehit probability
  2. Overview for Cash, Supplies, Natives, Colonists, Temperature
  3. Collected ship information (positions, lists per race, weapons)
  4. Find Planet
Nice going Joshua ;)

(2) done for Cash and Supplies in Starmap

(4) done via Search function.

Perhaps that can already be done with some tricks I didn't find out yet, but right now I think I can only use notes for ships. What I would like to have would be some kind of a game specific notebook function. That way I could just quickly note down what I planned to do, what planets need what or where I plan to move a fleet to - stuff like that.
