How does one jettison cargo in Nu?

There's a Jettison button in the ships UI there, you can't miss it.

I assume you are not seeing the button on the ship you are looking at because it is in orbit of a planet. You can ONLY Jettison in deep space. When you are over a planet you can just transfer the cargo to the surface.

A bit silly, I know.

Right on :) that had to be it because the button is pretty hard to miss :)

It woul dbe nice if we could jettison while in orbit, not sure if ther'es really a tactical reason not to allow such a command.

It does put a (minor) limit on cloaking races and makes economic warfare a tad harder for everyone. It has been so long that I don't remember if the original planets 3.5 had this restriction or not. I don't think it did but am not at all sure.

I remember this was a restriction in the original game as well. I think it is primarily there to prevent the whole "scorched earth" thing where a player could jettison every mineral and fuel into space just to prevent its capture. That would seriously change the flavor of invading someone else's space...

I always figured it was a programming shortcut to only allow it in deep space. At any rate, I miss the loud screams when you jettison clans! I used to do it one at a time for increased drama.

yeah and I remember when Jettisoning something was irreversible back in teh day.

But yeah we've all been there at some point... CAPTAIN!! WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FUEL TO GET TO THE PLANET!! WE HAVE TO .. uhmmm.... "lighten the load" if you know what I mean :)

Its sad when I'm more apt to jettison 500 clans into the cold depths of space as opposed to the 500 units of Molydium that is just way more important.

I also understand that jettison happens before Rob, so it's a good way to prevent those Privateers from taking your big carrier full of fighters (they only get the carrier).

Yep, I had forgotten you could jettison fighters, but yes, if you find your carrier in deep space after just having blown up an MBR or BR4/5, then its a good bet its a gonner, so might as well dump all the fuel except 1 unit and all the fighters.

Unless you had so much fuel that you maybe suspect the Pirate didn't bring enough to steal, that's a toughy though. Any good pirate brings enough :)

Capnkill: Read your reply about how jettison used to be irreversible. Thats how i remembered it too and assumed it was true here as well so i tested it out. Might be a bug.

Say you have two ships full to the brim and you want to transfer cargo between them. In nu you can now jettison cargo from one ship, do the cargo swap and then unjettison the cargo.

Sounds like a bug to me.

I agree that would be a bug. What is the result of this action?

I assume the excess cargo disappears, but what if the cargo is diversified, which cargo gets the axe?

Either way, its a bug.

I'd report it as a bug but i'm out of votes ;)

no cargo vanishes in this case since i have a total amount of cargo equal to my cargo capacity. But to do the shuffle you ahve to "temporarily" jettison. Which you couldn't do in old planets.

So essentially we have a guy in a space suit hanging out of the airlock with kton of cargo waiting for the shuffle to be completed then pulls it back in ;)
