PlanetsCON/NA 2016

I have bad news for the con. The museum where we are holding the ATC convention (which I planned to piggyback on their organization) has taken the room designated for PlanetsCON. They are going to be refurbishing it during the October time period.

We have been searching for another (reasonably priced) location in Springfield without luck and I am now searching in the Columbus area.

If I have to move the Con to Columbus, I will have to organize it from the ground up. This will likely mean a delay into the November/December time frame.

Stay tuned. If you are prepping presentations, I encourage you to continue. We will hold this Con.

If this becomes too problematic, I'd be willing to check things out around here (Maryland) to see what we can come up with. DC/Baltimore is pretty swarmed with conventions, but the Frederick area has some space that's potentially useful. Plus of course there's always Gettysburg, though that's even harder to get to.

(Took Lee over a month. Still, he beat Grant's time to Richmond; that took four years.)

I am committed to holding this. The question becomes, can I do it for a cost that folks are willing to pay.

I am trying to stay in Springfield because we have the hotel block pricing for ATC and access to the convention, if folks are interested, even though we are not going to be co-located.

If you want to make some initial inquiries we can at least have some comparison costs to think about.

Hotel costs are the tough part. I'm looking at $139/night rooms (plus tax). We get a free small conference room if we can fill up a block of ten rooms.

The difficulty in the Frederick area is getting transport from a major airport. It's a ways.

Gettysburg PA in October is similar; hotels are cheaper and conference rooms more available (plus richer in historical context), but it's an hour's drive from even a municipal airport (Hagerstown or Harrisburg).

Con space in a major airport city is a serious pain unless we're willing to locate somewhere like Bangor, Maine, Las Vegas, or Charlotte, SC. In the DC area, there's six major conventions each weekend through the entirety of October, with eleven that I know of on Hallowe'en.

If we were designing this from the ground up, I'd advise the capitol of a state containing other major cities. Harrisburg PA would be ideal in that sense, as would Albany NY.

(But of course we're not. That's just for purposes of comparison.)

@gnerphk The DC/Baltimore is a great area to hold it due to easy direct flights from almost anywhere in the country into one of 3 airports and a plethora of hotel options. If you are looking at reasonably priced locations, check out Greenbelt Mariott in Greenbelt Maryland.

it is a reasonably priced hotel and they have a bunch of large conference/party rooms that can be partitioned to fit the size of the convention. It is also rather easy to get to from all three airports, more so than Frederick.

I would like to reiterate again that the limiting factor is not the locations. The problem is usually that someone needs to step up and organise it. In this case, that person is Tom. Discussions about locations are useless unless people are willing to step up and help.

One of the biggest difficulties I see in setting up a NA Con is that there's very few instances where any two players are even acquainted, much less live in or near the same major city.

Hmmm....only a 7 hour drive for me (Straight down I-70 Westbound, I-70 is about 10 minutes from the hosue). This actually might be doable, if my wife can get her work schedule arranged (she works weekends, I'm warden for the kid). And it's far enough out for her to make arrangements.

If the work schedules are worked out, anyone coming from the Maryland-DC-Virginia area could tag along. I promise I won't use any Heavy Phasers on any other cars around, only call them various forms of the word "idiot".

Darth Balls, the dinner is Friday night from 5 to 6:30 p.m. But not everyone will get there by then. The main event is on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. And I am sure there will be side activities too. What to expect? In my experience, $20 is not an obstacle for most. Surely, someone willing to come over already will probably be willing to pay for lunch/rent of place too? In all fairness, Dazdya and I had to ask quite a lot more than this, but we did include dinner and drinks on the day itself.

The cost is $200 for the room rental and projector and $100 for water, coffee/tea and sodas. I imagine there will be additional costs, but the major costs will be covered if we have 15 confirmed guests.

I have not included the costs of lunch and dinner.

There are several possibilities for Friday evening. HMGS-GL will be running their convention ATC across the street and there will be plenty to do there. We can also go to a local veterans club (for food and drink) which we have access to through the the board members of HMGS-GL. One of our presenters has also reserved a suite and we could have a small gathering of folks there.

So nothing definite is currently planned, but there are things we can discuss/do.

It looks like this has (or soon will have) enough attendees to pay the bills. Congratulations on another step towards making this PlanetsCon a success.

I'm wondering how close we are to arranging "satellite" meetings (either a small meeting room or at a player's home) to watch the PlanetsCon proceedings, similar to what Frostriese is doing. I think there are enough people in the Seattle/Vancouver area, and there might be enough in the SoCal area (Los Angeles/San Diego). Beyond that, I don't know, and Spacesquad's map is unavailable for consultation :(

Question: The name of Gnerphk's presentation appears to have changed. Should this be updated in the doc we have for the PlanetsCon?

I probably won't know for sure until just before the con. The $20 is ok. Logistically, it's only about a 3 hour drive - so if I come I'll probably come a little late in the morning and leave a little early in the evening.

There was a fair amount of combat and lots of shieldless combat in turn 77 as a result of setup in turn 76 with Jason's help from the ships at p416. The focus should be on the hostile Firecloud s271 and Jason and my solution for removing these precious stolen ships from Privateer control as well as rapidly getting behind enemy lines and past a couple hundred light years of hostile web mines. The turn would have went better if I had brought more fighters, but at least we achieved the objective.

Hi Tom;

If we are driving in and want to get a room for the 30th and the 1st, should we go ahead and call to reserve them, or wait until you get a block of rooms together... That way in case Gnerphk and Dotman are playing a board game into the wee hours of the night, we don't have far to stumble....lol... Hey, besides what any other threads state.... NO PLAYING NAKED !!!

Although I will be driving my bike, I think I will bring a 12 pack of the local brew for sharing after the con. I would encourage those attending to find what is micro-brewed where you live and bring something to share your culture with ;-) If you are coming from across a big pond and can bring only one bottle of something, you should most likley bring something besides beer that is distilled locally ;-).

Awesome Lord Pollax. I was the opposite. They didn't knnow of the conference and HMGS didn't work. They had no clue what I was talking about on the phone. However, the code for hmehmeb worked out. It was a king size bed when I was looking for a queen, but I guess I will just roll around in bed a little more ;-) But there is a nice couch in case a sporatic board game breaks out ...

I will arrive the night before. Anyone else arriving the night before? maybe we can meet for a drink or someone can bring a game? Or maybe go together to a hotspot if there is any tourist thing to see in Springfield?

Use Advance The Colors as your convention reference. I have not even signed the contract for the room (though it is promised to us). So the staff has nothing on their books yet for PlanetsCON.

@Ryder, their is once daily service. It is about $10 each way, but unless you don't drive getting from the airport to the bus station and back in Columbus would be about as expensive as renting a car.

The Springfield bus station is also not near the convention hotel.

Note on the room reservation. The group code doesn't work through the website booking, as it says that it's no longer available (as of 9/8). I called their reservations group, told them about the historical miniature gaming conference (they couldn't find the group codes that were provided), and they were able to find it and gave me the $94/night rate. Otherwise, the standard rate right now is $132/night.

Yep, the convention code ends one month prior, so it should not be working at this point. Others have used different discount codes or you can call and hopefully get the code as Maximus1776 was able.

Question for attendees... Do you want coffee/tea service? It is going to cost $25-$50 for coffee and tea. If there are few or no coffee/tea drinkers, I may just provide soft drinks and water.

Hotel coffee/tea service is always inferior to Dunkin Donuts catering. Likewise, any local grocery store will have cookies and bottled water. Let's do the assembly ourselves if we can. We can bring hotel room coffee makers downstairs if we need to. :o)

A early formed Alliance of Birdmen and Robot with a a rocky start faced a combined attack of COM, Lizard, Rebell, Cyborg that had Meteors and Tholian Web Mine support.

Later even the feds turned on us, even though at this stage they where not.

This Turn was a game changer, since it brought back hope to our side and lifted the pressure from the northern Lizard ships raning down on us (really looks like rain if you fwd through the turn previous) by several lucky (or not unlucky) fights.

(dont expext a 20 carrier fight, its turn 65..)

I'm still planning on bringing along some fine locally crafted brews for Friday evening tasting "somewhere" and encourage everyone to bring along a sample of their own local craft brews. I'm also looking into adding a game or two for entertainment purposes as well.

I'm looking forward to this greatly, and am excited for our first NA gathering. The first of many hopefully.

Springfield is actually I nice small town. Has it had a more prosperous past? Yep, but things are improving.

Logistics: The room is ours from 9 am - 9 pm on Saturday and I have a schedule to fill that time (hopefully!). The room for the convention will be listed in the hotel lobby. Registration and payment of fees will take place on site. $20.

At the suggestion of a wargame buddy of mine, he thinks I ought to run a miniatures wargame Friday night just for the PlanetsCon folks over at the ATC convention.

Would there be any interest from those you attending? If so, what kind of game would be preferred? I have everything from Ancients to Modern periods, and can do naval, air warfare, or even some roleplay options for WW2. Nothing complicated, and everything will be taught at the table (so you don't need any experience to play).

No pressure to play, just a suggestion which meshes well with my desire to support the ATC guys since we did get their hotel benefits.

Let me know ASAP, so I know what to pack for my travels. You can also PM me with requests, so we don't clutter the feed.

I have set up a google+ hangouts site and tested it. It looks great for both live streaming presentations and online meetings (for the meet and greet).

Thin contacted me by email, but I am not certain I am understanding what he is asking me to do. I have sent him my gmail address because I believe that is what he needs to make me an admin on the Con page of G+.

I'd wear an XL t-shirt if an extra one turns up. My lighter won't touch down until late Friday afternoon but I look forward to catching up with some of you later in the evening around 7:30. Is there some kind of cloud-based way to coordinate different plans and outings for the evenings so we could more easily connect with each other? PMs work too; it's just harder to reach everyone. I plan on transporting a six pack of our local brew in among my checked baggage for the after party on Friday so I'll be happy to meet up with the beer and games crowd.

It's my intention to arrive late afternoon so I can attend dinner and beer for dinner. LOL, I did not want to speak for him, although that is exactly what I am doing!, I was going to suggest we meet at Bondservant's room before dinner to take off together. I am glad he suggested it before I did !!! Once it is decided, we can post it here for those arriving just a few minutes late can meet us there. And then during dinner we can talk about where to join for board games and to share our craft brews. I know I plan on bringing several 6 packs.... and drinking at least two six packs worth lol....

Can't be there but very excited to watch the presentations.
Please check if the video recording is correctly setup.

You guys do a great job setting up things but in the past the presentations were hard to see mainly due to day light reflections.
Low light room and a good camera angle help a lot.

Check the audio too before starting.

For all that will not be local I have created a g+ meetup (which is now on YouTube).

Go to YouTube and search for PlanetsCON 2016.

It asked me for PlanetCON 2016 (which is a comic convention) but if you click on the PlanetsCON 2016 the streaming is the first one listed.

It worked for me. Joshua, Ikester and the folks in Germany should test ahead of time to see if they can get to it.

I'm thinking Spring 42 rules -- bid for Axis. Let me explain. (No; let me sum up; there is too much. So Buttercup is marrying Humperdinck in a little less than half an hour...)

So the idea is, in the original A&A, the Axis almost always loses against a skilled and coordinated Allies. As such, the Axis team should get a bonus, measured in IPC value of extra units placed at the beginning of the game. Since 18 pretty much ensures a successful Germany invasion of Russia, bids usually run between 9 and (at the highest level) 17.

Tonight, though, I'm probably getting some sleep. Perhaps tomorrow?

The reason I'm not in Ohio is because my wife works weekend nights and could not get this weekend off. I take care of my autistic son on the weekends, so it's possible there could be some interruptions during my presentation. I just wanted to get this information out up front.

I believe I've messed something up trying to set up feeds, I'm getting out of memory errors, even after rebooting. My guess is some software has gotten some service started up that eats memory.

I will create a video of my presentation and put the link on the feed in the next day or so.

So, I'm getting a butt-kicking from technology that I usually get when I try to play as the Robots or Colonials!

Yes thank you. Great time this weekend at the CON. Beyond the very enjoyable and worthwhile time during the day with the presenters and discussion, it was lots of fun both Friday and Saturday nights too talking away. Last night we squeezed 14 people in our suite to keep the talks and beverages flowing. And even as it was approaching 4 AM I learned a little something that will improve my game.

Thank you for the awesome experience to see all these highly decorated commanders from US.

After reading throught the post - it seems we missed the best part :) Nonetheless we enjoyed your presentations very much.

I'm just catching up with the videos.

What a pleasure to see so many well known commanders in their real life appearance. With many of them I coorperated or duelled in the past. The introduction round was a fantastic idea. Should be considered as tradition for future Cons.

Great to see that you had as much fun as we had at the European Cons.

This page is a great resource both for experienced and new players.

It's also great to document the history of the game.

I hope we can keep up it and have a good one every year.

Kudos for all the contributors (organizers, presenters, documentation people and attendants).
