PLEASE tell me the REAL way to gift a ship!

I'm a bit frustrated at this point. I have read multiple forums, guides, etc and everything seems to conflict and nothing seems to work. I'm obviously doing something wrong since you are supposed to be able to take a ship from someone. There are three games I'm in where someone is trying to give me a ship and it's not working. So here is what I've tried (because the sources I've read say these are supposed ways to do it):

All games, I'm told they ahve the FC as 'gs#' (# corresponding to my race number)
1. Transfer a clan to their ship from your ship.
2. Have a ship in same spot with clans on board.
3. Transfer a clan AND have a ship with clans in same spot.
4. Doing the above three with my ship FC set to 'gs#'.
5. Changed starbase FC to match the gs# and put on force surrender.

What is the actual way to do this? Where I'm going wrong?

Ship transfer

The person who is giving the ship has to have the friendly code as your race number. This race number is the same as the letter as your primary enemy. So they click on primary enemy and note your race number or letter. In a 11 player game it is 1 to b. The 30 player is 1 to b plus a few more. So if you are the feds in an 11 player it would be GS1 (or gs1 or Gs1). if you are race d in a mass battle it is GSD (or gsD or GsD etc but better to do it exactly). To receive a ship you have to have a ship at the same place with a clan on. Then the ships will swap owners.

Star base swapping

I think this works by taking a ship to the persons star base. Drop all fuel onto their planet and they have force surrender on and they take it. You can have a ship with fuel still on it but they have to match friendly codes exactly ie ABC and ABC will swap and ABC and abc will not swap.

These work so use them.
