Incredible new Race Icon Set - Special Thanks![]() Monday, February 14, 2011 I would like to say a very big thank you to Jonathan Sue (aka JonnyDoH) a very talented graphic artist who volunteered his time to create a new Icon Set representing the 11 races of the Echo cluster. We've incorporated these icons on the new sign up screen (http://vgaplanets.nu/start-playing) and will be incorporating these icons into the game and other screens around the site. This is an important step in establishing an independent brand for VGA Planets outside of the popular Science Fiction characters each race represents. Here is the complete icon set as described by JonnyDoH himself: Click here for the complete set in PDF formatThanks Jonathan! These icons and their description certainly add value to the origin, playing style and perception of the races.
lindybomber - Thursday, February 17, 2011 7:26 PM Way is there a need to "independent brand for VGA Planets outside of the popular Science Fiction characters each race represents"? joshua - Thursday, February 17, 2011 8:40 PM @Lindy: Mainly due to copyright issues if Planets is to become a successful mainstream game. madinson - Friday, February 18, 2011 6:03 PM Great Job, well done! madinson - Saturday, February 19, 2011 5:23 PM Hi: I would change those colors. 1) So that every race gets its specific Color. 2) And, I would change the Rebel sign. Lets take a Falcon?! Or something with ice, because its so great those advantage: Falcons and living on Ice-planets! lindybomber - Saturday, February 19, 2011 6:17 PM Josh, Tim never seemed to have any copyright issues, so i don't know if that is a potential problem. But I am glad to see this level of forward thing. You see to have big plans for NU. As for this symbols themselves; I like the Lizards, Fascist, Privateers, Crystals, and Evil Empire. I don't like the Rebels-too simple, and the COM-too busy. I'm not sure about the Robots-what is it suppose to be? The rest I am indifferent to. For the rebels I would have done something with a fist grasping a weapon, or a broken chain. The COM I'm not sure, maybe something like a single glyph surrounded by 12 or 13 stars. Also I think Madinson is on to something, giving each race a distinct color wold be a good idea. What is the intended us of the "descriptions" Lindy solkar - Sunday, February 20, 2011 9:22 AM I'm with madison and lindybomber. I would make those colours for each race and I would use also those colours on the starmap. Having all "enemies" the same red makes confusing tha map. And I also like the idea of 13 stars and a single glyph for the Colonials ! ^_^ kissofpain - Tuesday, February 22, 2011 6:08 AM I'd also like to say great logos! As Iwork myself in the advertising and branding industry (I just had a pitch for a logo the other day, still waiting to see who won) I can appreciate this work with a critic eye. I think the robots logo represents a baseship, wait I mean an instrumentality class. And it looks cool. The colonies and the feds are rather busy, while the rebel is hmm... using an earth representation for a space empire? :) The other logos are pretty impressive. crazylike - Monday, March 07, 2011 6:05 AM I love the logos, but as a less experienced player, I really think there should be NAMES as well as logos on the choice screen. It makes new players feel excluded that they are supposed to know what race is what solely from the logos... kedalion - Monday, March 07, 2011 6:49 AM I agree with crazylike. It might also be a bit quick to have them choose their preferred race at the beginning. Naturally, they can join a game with any race later, but it's not obvious. In general some more text at the beginning might help.
