New: Explore Map Add-on![]() Tuesday, July 12, 2011 The explore map addon is here. Explore map is one of the traditional add-ons to VGA Planets. In an explore map game the map of the planets is not visible until you start exploring the map with your ships which makes the game more challenging. Explore map games will be available in the inner-quadrants and the first game is open for joining. The first explore map game is available here: 17969: Cylon System CommentsThere are 17 comments - add your comment figak - Tuesday, July 12, 2011 11:11 PM Excellent, what is the setting on range? Just wondering for HYP races. capnkill - Tuesday, July 12, 2011 11:47 PM Ohhh I wish this was here when I started my 2 games. Oh well, next time :) This is a great add on! Thanks!! rbos - Wednesday, July 13, 2011 5:41 AM Sweet. Will I wake up one day and find fleet battle an option? :D splash - Wednesday, July 13, 2011 2:23 PM I'm curious if the general features and add ons are going to be available in private games or only public? draven - Wednesday, July 13, 2011 2:46 PM I do not know if it were possible to change the coordinates of the cluster. I mean... it's nice you only see 150 ly's around your position, but if your HW is in (100, 100) you know you are in the left down corner of the map. If the center were in a random point of the cluster you could not rely on these data, so you would start absolutely lost in the space (and thereore hyperjumpers could just jump to nowhere, with the nearest planet at 100 ly's). suntzu - Wednesday, July 13, 2011 4:00 PM Great! I played all my old games with this add-on, I love it! koros - Thursday, July 14, 2011 12:58 AM Any chance this will get added to the custom games setup? raintree - Thursday, July 14, 2011 6:01 AM How exactly does HYPer jumping ships work with this. You just fly out and see what's there? Can people still see your ships in deep space? chaos1357 - Friday, July 15, 2011 12:19 AM If visible range is 150, is darksense range left at default (200)? If so, how is the sensed planets that aren't visible yet dealt with? capnkill - Friday, July 15, 2011 12:28 AM Well the planets are still there... you just can't see them, but you can still sense them I assume. draven - Friday, July 15, 2011 12:32 AM "If visible range is 150, is darksense range left at default (200)? If
so, how is the sensed planets that aren't visible yet dealt with?" Good question, young Padawan. The secrets of the Force cannot be learnt quickly, so prevail in your studies and maybe one day (only maybe) I shall tell you. In the meantime go on polishing my black helmet. XD sirius113 - Friday, July 15, 2011 12:44 AM Another question: If ship visible range is 350ly, can you see the ships in orbit of a planet, if you can't see the planet? ^^ vacco blixx - Monday, July 18, 2011 9:25 PM This seems kind of silly, we see stars much futher away with current Earth tech. But finding a ship in open space should be almost impossable. want to do an upgrade change planets to stars and give them a solar system. emork the lizard king - Tuesday, July 19, 2011 8:00 AM One hint here: Explore map allows to set a percentage that you discover an unowned planet within your scan range and another percentage that you detect an already owned planet within your scan range. The scan range for owned planets could be set differently to that one for the unonwed planets. We mostly used settings where you have to come close to enemy planets to (sometimes) discover one. Was quite funny and leads to a new evaluation of the different races and special manoveurs. Espcially for games with only a few players and small maps with individual shapes this was a great new way of playing Planets. marklein - Wednesday, July 27, 2011 2:26 AM So wait. Does it generate a random map? Because if it used Echo Cluster then I could easily figure out where I am based on a known Echo map. Does it wrap edges? That would be great. And I'm also interested to know what the scan ranges are set for. Actually "interested" isn't quite right since this would be VITAL knowledge to play competitively. jessilaurn - Saturday, August 27, 2011 3:40 PM Question, since I can't find documentation for Explore Map anywhere, and never got to use this add-on Back In The Day (TM): does ship mission matter for purposes of range-of-sight (Sensor Sweep, Exploration, etc)? Or is it a flat range per host settings regardless of mission? lindybomber - Saturday, August 27, 2011 3:54 PM When the stellar cartography one of the first things I thought of is how that could be used to create an explore map by creating one giant nebula. Personally, I never liked the idea of explore map for the reasons vacco blixx points out. However, if you assume that map is just showing the star systems that have a class m planet and is ignoring hundreds of star that have no usable planets then explore map kinda makes sense. Of course 20 years from now when we have mapped out all solar systems within 1,000ly of earth it wont make sense again.
