New Feature: Player Groups

Monday, February 3, 2020

We are introducing a new feature for Planets Nu today - Player Groups. Groups provide a way for players to organize themselves, with group-only chat feeds and games. Anyone can create a group using the "Manage Groups" button on their home page. Group creators will serve as admins for the group and can:

  • make changes to the groups icon and description
  • invite/approve players to join
  • remove players from the group
  • promote other members to admin status

To join an existing group, it is a 2-step process, either:

  1. A player requests to join a group from the group's main page, and the request is then approved by a group admin, or...
  2. A player is invited to join by a group admin, and the player accepts the invitation

Any member of a group can create a "group member only" game that will only allow members of that group to join. These games will be listed on the group's games tab, and will not appear on the main list of joining games (they also skip the interest-gathering phase).

There are two different type of groups:

Casual Groups

Casual Groups can be based around anything: a group of friends, a game series like Die Hard or Dogfights, or any common interest between players. The group activity and games tabs can be quite useful for organizing games amongst the group members. There are no restrictions on how many members a Casual Group can have, and a player can belong to any number of Casual Groups.

League Teams

League Teams are groups organized to compete in upcoming Planets Nu League games. League games will be offered in a variety of formats each season, with each team member being able to join a limited number. Each League Team is limited to 11 players, and a player can only belong to one League Team. Much more detail on Planets League and how it will fit into future Championship games will be coming soon.

The type of group must be selected when the group is created and cannot be changed later.

Summary

Overall, we hope the new Player Groups feature will provide a place for both casual and competitive players to find each other and get the most out of their Planets experience.

Go forth and group up.
