Super Zoom - iPad Support - Accurate Minfield Preview

Friday, August 12, 2011
Several major enhancements have just been released to everyone after a week of testing by the test group. New features include zooming up to 4000% with a special warp-well view, touch screen support for iPad and iPhone (Android still to come) and now accurate minefield previews even when laying mines inside of existing minefields.

Super Zoom with Warp Well View

The new zoom levels work exactly as they do now with the + and - keys allowing you to zoom in and out. Only now you can zoom in to 4000% (this function does not work on IE8 or IE7 which do not support HTML5 Canvas).  In addition to the + and - keys a new hotkey "z" can be used to jump directly to the 4000% warp well level and back to normal zoom.

iPad and iPhone support

We have now added the first level of touch support for iPad and iPhone and done testing on these devices. It is now possible to play your turn in the browser on your iPad, the iPhone screen is quite small but works. There are still a few small known issues (scrolling on the dashboard) that need to be worked out. We are planning to make the entire site more tablet friendly and support for Android devices is coming.

Accurate Minefield Preview

The minefield preview for ships with the "Lay Mines" mission has now been improved to support extending existing minefields, and the interactions between multiple mine laying ships. When a ship is on the lay mines mission all minefields you are laying this turn will be displayed in a slightly lighter shade of green.

We hope you enjoy the new functionality and thanks to the new test group who found a few bugs in this release before we deliver it out to everyone!

Woohoo for iPad support as well as to other enhancements!

That's fantastic. While still slower, I enjoy working with my iPad now, and will really enjoy it when I can scroll on my dashboard. I should have subscribed for two years instead of just one!

If you can figure out how I can hover over a planet with my finger on my iPad, like I hover with my mouse over a planet on my desktop's monitor, and can see a planet's full description of content, then I will sign up for lifetime :).

Pretty cool.

But it would be nice to have universal control over the preview setting. So there should be a toggle (hot key) that shows me all the new mines dropped and only the ship that I'm currently on. Sometimes you don't really want to see what everyone that is laying mines is doing.

Also I hope that we'll get similar preview functionality for mine scooping, since that is a bigger pain in the arse to calculate.

Good stuff though!

Also on really important thing, I don't think there is much point in showing the old minefield circle still, it just makes things more difficult to see.

I think all we really need is the "after" picture, combining the "Before" AND "after" just creates too much clutter, and doesn't really provide any useful information.

And one last note, since I keep remembering new things. I hope that when the previewer supports mine scoop previews that it can also support mine fields blowing up other minefields previews as well.

Ok I'm done :)

Awesome!!! I think I can post in here from my iPhone, too! Fantastic!

I just tested out the 4000% zoom and it is just the kind of feature I was looking for. The ability to see things clearly at the pixel level could actually spark some interesting possibilities within a warp well.

Thank you!

There is still a bug with the new minefield preview. If you have 2 ships in the same position with the minelay mission set(or web minelay in my situation) and you try to transfer the torpos form one ship to the other. The resulting minefield is correctly showed but you are not able to transfer the torps from one ship to the other. (Update you transfer them but you don't see any change in the transfer screen.)

You can try it yourself Josua in the game http://vgaplanets.nu/games/4931 between the ships 251 and 320. Try to transfer the torps from one to the other.

Regards,

Nite

Thanks nitemare, I'd had a report like that but couldn't narrow down the cause. Got it fixed now.

The enhanced' minefield view has so much potential. BUT.. show the new minefield (layout) in a different (default) color.

To all the Brits out there - (Thats how we Americans spell 'color') - We brought the language sense - and dropped the 'U' - Mr. Webster was On Point. And he took logical control of our common language. Oy! :)

Recommend a USA v. Europe Game. Make it happen Joshua.

The 'new' minefield layout should be displayed in a different color.   The display mechanics / code is excellent. Just needs to be differentiated. And I know, because I love to lay mines.   :)

How about North America vs Europe... I am Canadian after all!
capnkill - Saturday, August 13, 2011 8:35 AM
If you are inside a regular mine field, and you lay a web field, the color of the webfield will be green instead of purple on the previewer.
mjs68508 - Saturday, August 13, 2011 10:17 AM
And you keep getting better and better and better . . .

We already have team games (3 vs 3 vs 3 vs 3). So, I don't know if N. America vs. Europe is a good idea. Instead, I would like to see teams form where we can have 5 vs 5 and/or 6 vs 6 matches.
sakawa - Saturday, August 13, 2011 12:07 PM
BRILLIANT! Nice one! THANKS!
thin lizzy - Saturday, August 13, 2011 12:23 PM

i like these features!!

the fornax game is pretty close to an euro-american game already. there we have two american teams, one european and one euro-asian team.. but as mjs says, 4x3 is something completely different than 5/5 or 6/6 of course.
sjharley - Saturday, August 13, 2011 1:06 PM
really good update all very very useful.
d-wreck - Saturday, August 13, 2011 9:52 PM
North America v. Europe would be good fun. I would like to be involved in a game that is specifically set up in this format. I already see that we have outstanding players from all around the world here. Seems that Spain and England are very well represented from what I have read.

Thanks a lot for the minefield feature improvement! :-)

Every Crystal in the whole Nuniverse is happy now!

Thx a lot for that major enhancement.

sakawa - Sunday, August 21, 2011 5:55 PM
Just found it, I know it has been said on the top. :-)

"New hotkey "z" can be used to jump directly to the 4000% warp well level and back to normal zoom. "

If you press it twice the Z you go out of the zoom and back where you were.

By the way Joshua it has not been added it to the hotkeys list. ;-)

Starmap still doesnt seem to fully load or render on iPad. Ive tried a couple differnt browsers with the same result.. thoughts?

I'm really jazzed about the iPad working.. thank you Joshua!
koros - Wednesday, August 24, 2011 12:05 AM
I verified today at work that 2 iPad2's worked correctly but 2 original iPads did not.
leader98 - Friday, January 27, 2012 9:51 AM
On the original iPad I am getting thrown back to the desktop a lot when trying to run my turn in Safari
daniel payne - Friday, January 27, 2012 11:38 AM
Your page file got too big. It happens on IPad 2 also. Not much you can do.
