Here is the complete interview as seen in the Planets Newsletter - Enjoy!
PN: Tell us a little about yourself.
B: I'm just an old geezer who's been married for 32 years and I have 2 grown daughters. My interest in strategy games started around 50 years ago when my grandfather and I would play Stratego.
PN: When did you first start playing?
B: I played a few VGAP 3 games back around 1994 and liked it, but not enough to keep playing it. There was too much to keep track of I thought. I came back around a year or so later when Winplan was released and I also started using Echoview.
PN: What's your favorite race and why?
B: The Borg became my favorite when they acquired the ability to chunnel. However I do strongly identify with the Klingons and I really like the double beams they have here at Planets Nu.
PN: What do you build on first three turns with them (or your general opening strategy)?
B: For the Borg, probe, LDSF, probe. For most races, usually three LDSFs.However lately I've been building a MDSF on the first turn.
PN: How many games do you play at the same time?
B: Six or more until I start getting burnt out. Once I get fully burnt out I'll leave planets for a year or three, but for some reason I keep coming back for more.
PN: What types of games do you like playing most?
B: In the old days, games with add-ons like Dan & Dave or The Killing Floor. At Planets Nu I play mostly standard games.
PN: What's your most memorable game, and what made it so interesting?
B: My most memorable game was around 10 years ago at another site. I was playing as the Klingons in a game with B A N E and I remember looking at the ship count one turn and he had 0 war ships and 10 freighters. I thought, this is the guy who wrote a lot of that user documentation? *pfff* Well, needless to say, he whipped my Klingon butt and it wasn't even close.
PN: Name a memorable friend and/or a memorable foe, and what made them stand out.
B: Siberian Snake. Again at another site years ago. I watched him work with a player to kill a powerful opponent and then afterwards devour that player completely. After that we worked together to take the game. I did keep one eye on him while we were working together tho'.
PN: Give an example of excellent tactics you've used or seen (w/ details so readers can view it, if possible).
B: There's a fellow here at Planets Nu, that goes by the name Joshua. I would recommend checking out his games. I do like that anyone can view finished games. I think that's very helpful.
PN: What do you think is the most important skill for a Planets player to succeed?
B: Diplomacy with other players, followed by building a good economy.
PN: Describe the process you use to make a turn.
B: Like a lot of players I view any vcrs, then reports, then a check of the scoreboard. After that I head to the starmap to plot out the moves.
PN: What is your favorite thing about Panets Nu?
B: Communicating with players all around the world.
PN: Is there anything else you would like to add?
B I recommend that you try Tim's Amorphous Soup. It's very tasty.
