Updated minefield graphics and colors

Friday, July 29, 2011
We have just released a new version which has some slightly updated graphics for minefields and ionstorms. This is part of a larger series of changes and improvements which are currently in development and will be released soon.

The new graphics are a bit darker than the old version. If you are using the default color scheme and find that they look a little too dark to you then go into your Settings and click "Reset" to update the the latest default colors. The new colors we've chosen are a little brighter and look better with the new gradient minefields and ionstorms.

PS. The screenshot is from the massive collection of mines that Veldan has laid down as the Robots in our game in the Indy System which is nearing its end.

hmmmm...wondering if this update is what seems to be screwing up the movement screen. Once I set a destination to a planet the movement info, fuel, speed, turns to destination rolls up and cant be seen.If i set the ships destination to itself the information reappears. Is this a new bug or am I missing something?
dark'a'man - Friday, July 29, 2011 9:57 AM
Same here. Can't do my turns this way.
jamie - Friday, July 29, 2011 10:25 AM
Same here when i select a planet to move to the browser stops responding
dangerjoe - Friday, July 29, 2011 11:19 AM
propose to switch back until fix - I cannot access ships anymore since 7:30 am CEST.
figak - Friday, July 29, 2011 12:57 PM
which browser do you use? Just wondering in Chrome it seems ok
dark'a'man - Friday, July 29, 2011 1:14 PM
Tried Chrome as well. It looks a little bit better, but as soon as I try to set a waypoint for a ships, the browser hangs.

I also got 2 Chrome sessions, both taking about 45% of my processor capacity.

My chrome version is 12.0.742.122.

Using Safari
Brow1985 - Friday, July 29, 2011 1:55 PM
now i can't sign in at all
jamie - Friday, July 29, 2011 1:55 PM
no wait it's just let me sign in
jessilaurn - Friday, July 29, 2011 2:32 PM
Sure enough. Using Chrome, browser hangs when I try to set ship waypoints. Can we please revert to previous version?
d-wreck - Friday, July 29, 2011 2:38 PM
This update has pretty much made playing here impossible. Tried every browser...all hang up or lock up at some point.  Hope there will be a host delay implemented for Friday turns.
jamie - Friday, July 29, 2011 2:41 PM
Work around for my problem: Make sure the ship has a warp setting higher than Zero before setting waypoint. This stopped the freeze. Allowed me to complete my turn.
dangerjoe - Friday, July 29, 2011 3:06 PM
problem still existing - warp factor is 9 - no way to work around
mbr162 - Friday, July 29, 2011 3:34 PM
Despite the bugs the new ion storm and mine fields graphic is very nice.
dangerjoe - Friday, July 29, 2011 3:41 PM
In fact I do not see the difference - looks as ever!
O.K. - I do only see one minefield and no storms so far ...
jessilaurn - Friday, July 29, 2011 3:42 PM
The graphics are lovely, yes, but the lack of functionality is a show-stopper bug.
nitemare - Friday, July 29, 2011 3:49 PM
It's quite dificult to diference the existing minefields and the new one that you are setting.
jessilaurn - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:12 PM
OK, the speed-first workaround worked for me. Setting a warp speed above zero before setting a waypoint avoided the lock-up.
leo van nierop - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:21 PM
I also find that moving the map around has slowed down by a lot, it seems like the new graphics take a lot more computer power and/or bandwidth. I am running Firefox on mandriva linux, and dragging the screen now goes in starts and fits while it was smooth before this change.

joshua - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:27 PM
Wow, sorry about this guys. I have been playing with this version for over a week in testing and never experienced the warp 0 CPU bug. I guess I always set my speed first.

This has been resolved.
ronnle robot - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:32 PM
Seems like there may be some more issues here? At the moment using Firefox 3.6.8 (I will try and update later) and when selecting a ship I get the starmap without any ship information showing but I can still set waypoint for the ship. When I go back to the Dashboard and select the same ship again the information shows up, but the Movement section still collapses as soon as I set a waypoint away from the ship itself?
ronnle robot - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:34 PM
Same problem with IE 9.
halion - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:42 PM
issue still exists and makes my 3 due turns non-playable. staying up for a little longer to see if there is a fix, otherwise request a delay so i can do them in the morning (living in Asia 11.45pm here))
ronnle robot - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:43 PM
One last data-point, Chrome seems to work just fine with the new interface (now)
d-wreck - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:46 PM
IE9 / Chrome... software not functioning right still. That warp setting fix has not corrected the issues.
halion - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:53 PM
confirmed that it works in chrome(so far). thanks Ronnie. should get things in on time.
joshua - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:54 PM
D-Wreck, can you close your browser completely and then come back in? The bug was a particularly nasty one which caused an infinite loop to start eating up your CPU. So if you encounter the bug then basically it can take down your entire computer until you properly shut down your browser. You may even need to reboot your computer if the browser is refusing to close.
notoriousdave - Friday, July 29, 2011 4:56 PM
I'm having problems in chrome, firefox and ie.
to wit:
Chrome - if I try to build a falcon class escort, I get an 'unknown error' and then nothing responds anymore
firefox - when I try to set a waypoint for my ship the browser hangs and has to be closed through task manager
ie - when I try to select a ship I just go to the starmap where any amount of clicking will not bring up a planet, ship, or starbase.
dangerjoe - Friday, July 29, 2011 5:13 PM
The problem is not yet solved!

notoriousdave does describe it correctly!

+ IE: selcting a ship and toggling through with arrow keys results in 2 out of 12 which can be assessed.

Propose you go back to backup joshua
DAF11 - Friday, July 29, 2011 5:15 PM
can't make my turns.
setting warp speed isn't possible yet.

Firefox 3.6 and IE 9
hpotter - Friday, July 29, 2011 5:21 PM
Perhaps it's time to start a Beta test group that can test changes before they are released.
veldan - Friday, July 29, 2011 5:46 PM
Been using this since Joshua started the updates 2 days ago... Firefox 5 working great!

The mines are definitely a collection... I'm lazy so I haven't scooped anything up to move the mines south.

The UI makes predicting minefields completely not worth the time, so it's just quicker for me to drop 10k mc on loading up a Cat's paw and having an MCBR tow it around and drop 'big ole minefields' all over everyone else. Haven't had a reason yet to layer my minefields more intelligently.

I like the changes Joshua, looking good. Now go fix the other browsers!
rbos - Friday, July 29, 2011 6:00 PM
It'd be nice if downloading RSTs/uploading TRNs were possible, as an option.
notoriousdave - Friday, July 29, 2011 6:05 PM
rebooted as per joshua's suggestion and firefox is 100% clean for me. done turns as 3 races and she's apples.
xavier - Friday, July 29, 2011 6:12 PM
I can't play my turn either... Firefox 3.6.18

I tried setting speed above 0 before doing anything else... I still cannot see anything below the 'movement' bar if the waypoint is set away from the ship itself...

Joshua,
Please postpone host runs until this is fixed!
xavier - Friday, July 29, 2011 6:14 PM
I did try restarting Firefox and then rebooting, neither fixed the problem.
kite - Friday, July 29, 2011 7:16 PM
I can't view any object in my starmap. Fix it please. I use Chrome.
joshua - Friday, July 29, 2011 7:20 PM
I'm 99% sure that anyone still having problems has the old version in their browser cache.

Try pressing CTRL-F5 to reload your "My Games" page before entering the game. This will usually refresh you cache. Please message me directly via the /contact form if you are still having problems.
d-wreck - Friday, July 29, 2011 8:21 PM
Reboot does the trick with IE9. Everything working again...
yakies1 - Friday, July 29, 2011 9:33 PM
A note on the new gradient minefields / ion storms: It looks nice, of course, but I feel that they give the apperance that minefields and ion storms are somehow more concentrated in the center. While I know this is not the case, will a few newbies make a tactical error here or there because they got the wrong impression of the graphics? I don't really think it has to go back to the old way, but it's food for thought.
mjs68508 - Friday, July 29, 2011 9:54 PM
I have really enjoyed all the improvements so far. But. I don't like this one at all. Positions are less clear. And, a minefield on an ion storm is pretty opaque.
capnkill - Saturday, July 30, 2011 1:36 AM
The new graphics for the minefields are very nice!

humanlightningrod - Saturday, July 30, 2011 4:30 AM
Graphics are nice, but why the heck is this conversation being carried out here? My first instinct was look at the BUG section of the FORUMS. The biggest two threads about the bug still don't have a solution posted and given the well known names I saw in some of those threads and how long previously they had been posted, when I went to take my turn i figured the problem was a big one they couldn't fix quick and a host delay would be certain. I lost my turn and would be surprised if I was the only one.
I just found one reference to this page in a small thread about the bug now. Must be other people who looked at the forums and saw no solution and lost their turn. Please can we have fixes listed their first as I'm betting thats where most people look first?
thin lizzy - Saturday, July 30, 2011 10:14 AM

firefox 5 is working.

i personally find the graphics could be adjusted a little bit, because minefields and stronger ions are very opaque, as mjs says, and class 4+5 ions have a super strong gradient making them look like balls and suggest they are stronger on the inside.

i like the little gradient and the center black dot in the minefields better - maybe the ions can have a similar -slight- gradient, and still show their strength via the overall opacity?
sakawa - Saturday, July 30, 2011 11:23 AM
Any improvements it is good. But ¿Was this one necessary? I am not that sure about it. The problem created yesterday was unnecessary. The old version was clear and nice already. Perhaps little problem for extra-extra-extra-multiple webmines but one case in a 1000.

I would rather prefer to see bugs fixed and, if possible, improve things that have been demanded for a while.

If things are fine better do not touch them. That works in real life and I am sure it works here too. ;-)
sakawa - Saturday, July 30, 2011 11:26 AM
ahhh I was lucky I had my turns ready but next time if there is a mayor issue like yesterday you should get a POP UP once you sign in telling you for example "New improvement. If you have problems. Clear you cache and refresh your browser"
figak - Saturday, July 30, 2011 11:59 AM
Sakawa thats a bit far.

They need to keep doing updates and this one, as stated above, its a start. I doesn't introduce anything new that we see but the trick is in what comes behind. I suspect, I don't know details.

Also the recovery was rather fast and I'm sure there are some valuable lessons that the NU team learnt from this.

You have a point that there are open bugs to be fixed, I look forward to have some structure to report, track and close them. As you cAn see in the forum, half the time its not a bug. So its hard work to split the corn from the hay.

sakawa - Saturday, July 30, 2011 10:57 PM
Figak problems come to your door even when you do not call them, then was the point to call them.

At this stage of the journey when the restaurant it is near for the opening you do not paint the ceiling just in case you ruin the tables and the floor. :-) And if you have to do it, well be careful! I am sure they did but...

The place is brilliant. The effort huge and the time input sure it is huge too. It has been a loooong hard trip.... Do not complicate yourselves, easy things! Make sure that the menu is perfect (the minimum bugs as possible and smooth, probably it is at 99% now, perfect! well done!) and if you can have extra amenities (improvements requested) perfect. That´s all! Easy!

I am sure updates are done and will be done frequently without us noting those. But they should know, or at least cover their backs, if a major change becomes unfriendly. They should do something in advance. Give notice in advance by email or by a post on the site just telling players, tomorrow between this and this time we will be working on the site...hey try to put your turns a bit earlier just in case...better safe than sorry. We are working to make this site better for you. ;-)

I will give an idea for major updates and major changes. A simple traffic light with a time that shows the time reminding to get red.

Red: Working on the site/major changes in place. If you find problems contact the admin, report into the forum or click this link for a possible solution.

Orange: Changes done. No issues reported or have been solved.

Green: No working on the site. Working fine. Successful operation.

Try to use, before hand, test games as exposed here:

http://vgaplanets.nu/discussion/test-games

If not possible a test server. "Close" the site for all the games but just some test games with different browsers to be allowed to play for 2-3 hours and see what happens.

The admin could make an info page too, no idea if there is one already, to say the game working fine for those browser versions Firefox 4.6 and above or IE 7.0 and above...sometimes the problem might be in our site. Or even how to clean the cache. Some people they do not how to do it. Seems stupid but it is true. :-(

I am sure that it took time to design and put in play the new stuff from yesterday, I have not doubt about it. Thanks for the effort! But if you want to play in a major league you have to show that you can play, this is the point I want to make. If you are closing the line from Beta... yesterday issue it is not good for the business. I am sure they know it and took good notes about it. ;-) COME ON BOYS!

By the way, off-topic, I think, if they do not have it in mind, and want to go a bit further they should think about translating the game to Chinese and Japanese and give it a go. Big markets and kind of people, I think, that love this kind of games.

Saludos!

donaldworrell - Sunday, July 31, 2011 12:56 AM
This is still beta software till what september ? when the $30 per year kicks in. Get pushing the software and get the new changes working and I will ride the wave.
kite - Sunday, July 31, 2011 8:55 AM
I solved the problem with the starmap.
You only need to reset color settings.
And it will work in any browser.
dangerjoe - Sunday, July 31, 2011 9:08 AM
That's NOT true - tried that on Friday already and it did not work
valhalla - Monday, August 01, 2011 2:07 PM
Hopefully the bugs will get worked out.

It is a bonus to instantly see the intensity of ion storms graphically. That is a very helpful feature.
sirius113 - Monday, August 01, 2011 2:38 PM
@sakawa: I don't think that this game will work in China/Japan. Somehow they like simple repetitive games.
If there would be a Cashshop where you could buy ig advantages it would be a good thing to release it in Russia aswell xD
kedalion - Thursday, August 11, 2011 8:24 PM
I have a couple of overlapping minefields. Now I can barely see any movement lines as they are covered in the green.
capnkill - Thursday, August 11, 2011 8:44 PM
Just change the color of your minefields.

Dashboard / Settings

Google hex colors and you can get the code for whatever color youw ant
