I'm playing VGA Planets 3.0 for 15 (?) years now. It's definitly not the best looking, but by far the most strategic game ever. Combined with VPA, you get a surface making strategic planning brilliant. Using add-ons like SB+, RC+, Sphere and Jumpgate you create a universe with endless possibilities.
