2014  CLASSIC  QUALIFYING  GAME  -  PLS-70

(PLS = Planets Limit Ships)

Start Date June 1, 2014

GAME  PARAMETERS

Campaign Mode = No
Hosts Days = 2X per week
Win Condition = Fixed Turn (100 Turns)
Fast Start = 5 Turns
Max Allies = 0
Planets = 500
Ship Limit = 999***
Star Clusters/Nebulas/Debris Disks = 0
Ion Storms = 4
Planets.nu Registration = Mandatory
Tenacity and Rank = Commander (See qualifying section)

***Ship Limit = While the game has an overall limit, this will probably not be reached. In the very unlikely event the ship limit is reached, normal build procedures will kick in until the number of ships becomes less than 999. Each person has their own voluntary limit which they agree to adhere to in order to play.

Each player is limited to a number of ships equal to the number of planets they have (minimum 70). Examples:

10 planets: Maximum ships = 70
95 planets: Maximum ships = 95

Nuts and Bolts:

Each turn a player may build as many ships as they want as long as they don't exceed their voluntary ship limit. Examples:

10 planets, 15 ships: Player may build 55 ships this turn.
55 planets, 50 ships: Player may build 20 ships this turn.
75 planets, 60 ships: Player may build 15 ships this turn.
85 planets, 60 ships, recycling 3 ships, colonizing 2 ships: Player may build 30 ships this turn.

Players may not give ships to other players if they are at or over their limit.

Possible combat losses may not be taken into account.

Do not count ships you hope to give away this turn.

The only ways a person may go over their limit is by capturing ships or losing planets. If this happens, a player may not build ships until they are under the limit, again.

QUALIFYING  PROCEDURE

Like the Championship game, the highest qualifier of each race will be invited to play on, or shortly after, June 1, 2014.

Qualifiers: (All numbers will be gotten from planets.nu on June 1, 2014.)

1. Rank - The player with the highest rank in each race will be the first to be invited. Ranks go from Fleet Admiral (highest) to Commander (lowest). In addition:

Supreme Commanders outrank Fleet Admirals
Emperors outrank Supreme Commanders
Designers (Joshua/Tim) outrank Emperors

Note: You must be at least a Commander in a race to enter/play that race.

2. Tie-breaker #1 - In the event that 2 players of the same rank want to play, the tie-breaker will be:

Achievements Points x Tenacity

Procedure:

All players must be registered players of planets.nu.

On, or shortly after June 1, 2014, players will be notified that they qualified and asked to confirm that they are playing. If they do not respond or decide that they cannot/should not participate at that time, the next qualifier on the list will be asked. This will continue until the position is filled or there are no more entrants in that race.

Note that due to this notification/entry procedure, the actual game may not begin for 1-3 weeks, afterward.

HOW  TO  ENTER

If, and only if, you are a registered player on planets.nu, PM me (go to my profile and click "SEND MESSAGE"), mjs68508, and send me:

1. Your planets.nu ID
2. (Optional: E-mail address)
3. Your racial preferences and your preferred races. Example:  I qualify with Empire, Robots, Cyborg, and Fascists. My racial preference may be:

(1) Empire
(2) Fascist
(3) Robots

This means, in this specific game, I most prefer to play the Empire, then the Fascists, then the Robots, and I am not interested in playing the Cyborgs.

Remember, entering does not automatically qualify or enter you into the game. It means you would like to be considered for a position on June 1, 2014. There is absolutely no stigma in declining to play at that time. Perhaps RL has intruded. Perhaps you are doing better in your other games than expected.

NOTES

1. The reason for the delay is to weed out the impulse joiners who are likely to quit. In addition, this allows people to "clear their schedule" so they will have time for this game. Highly qualified players may want to refrain from joining other games so they can devote sufficient time to this game. This will be a tough game with tough opponents. No sissies need apply.

2. The game will be played as long as there are at least 8 players. In the event that there are fewer than 11 players, the size of the sector and the number of planets will be scaled down accordingly. There will be only one player of each race.

3. In the event there is a huge number of qualified applicants, a second, third, etc game may be started after the first turn of the first game. So, even if you are not the highest qualified, but want to play in this game, you will want to register.

4. Like in a Die Hard game, a person is expected to finish the game. In case RL intrudes, he is expected to notify the host, if at all possible. In the event a player has to leave, the game will be put on hold. Replacements will be chosen first from the original entry pool, then by asking for players from the general community.

5. Remember the special feature of this game is PLS. At this time, it must be done on a voluntary basis. All players are expected to keep this limit. The public game page will show any violators. It is considered CHEATING if you go over your limit, except via capturing or planet loss.

6. Those who drop out without notice will be barred from future special Qualifying games.

7. Planetoids DO NOT count as planets as far as ship limits are concerned. Fortunately, the public planet count does not count planetoids. It does count planetoid star bases. But, that doesn't matter.

This week's philosophy:

This format will be really good for the torp races. Their SB's cost more, since they have to have torp tech. This will save everyone money on SB's, especially torp races. A few SB's can be for production and the rest for defense. With a lot less money poured into SB tech, more can be poured into SB defense, which will also help the torp races. SB's are often the torp races' best ship. In addition, it won't matter that carrier races get pbp's for killing a guard ship, while the torp races then get nothing for killing the carrier with the SB.

"Don't worry about what pet strategy of yours this will ruin. Think of all the new nasty strategies you can develop with a guaranteed 70 ship slots."

In this game you can think, "What should I build next?" instead of, "What can I build this turn to own a ship slot?"

Oops, I forgot to put a minimum rank. We will try it with no minimum. Remember, if you drop without explanation, you can never join another PLS-70 game.

Also, there is no minimum Tenacity listed as there used to be. So, no minimum needed either.
