At the moment you resign that's that, i suggest some options are made available to the departing player:

1) This race is still playable - but I can't anymore (open)
2) This race is unplayable - I surrender it (dead)
3) I have a replacement player (enter name here)

Player "name here" gets an email with a link to confirm that he wants to take over, if not clicked by next host (or 24h which ever is longest) then race goes to open.

I like the idea as is clearly seen by the number of +1's above me.  by the way howmany +1 does an idea need to warrant dev action ;)

Again i recall the discussion on a sticky thread with the combined list of enhancement ideas that can be collated and possibly voted/ranked/prioritised to assess community demand......

How does this idea fit with donalds discussion about changing the auto dead percentages to higher numbers or scaling as game proghersses etc. (there was more than that in the main discusison)

would we allow/want someone to kill the game for everyone else by surrendering/and destroying a race that was in 1st place etc.. what would happen to the ships/planets i assume they are not removed and are up for grabs. all this does is stop someone taking it over... would need to think about that a little.. maybe tie the options into the scaling military score as per the donaldworrell thread on dead races.....

I like the idea of nominating a replacement player would make the handover more secire and stop osnoen else jumping in.. i would like to see this type of replacement encouraged and possibly rewarded in whatever reputation/credit system we may have in the future

also now a race can turn over many times.  I believe a limit to the number of times a race can change hands before it has to die is in order.

A couple more thoughts:

1) If the race is deemed unplayable, all ships over planets are automatically colonized.

2) If a race stay open for more than 10 turns, it is declared dead and all ships colonized.

No fun when someone leaves 30 or 40 ships for the Privs or Crystals to grab...

If I fight a race and cause the opponent to quit, I think I'm entitled to first dibs on their loot irregardless of the race I am playing.  If am already in enemy space and their ships magically disappear, I am robbed of that opportunity. 

And, for the record, there are ways for all races to capture medium and small sized ships.  Some of these ships are very valuable, they make fuel, decloak cloakers, HYP, etc.   

Also, 30 or 40 colonized ships means 30 to 40 ship builds after the ship limit.  The Xtals, priv and the other cloaking races will only be able to build small ships from their ship list. Another disadvantage for them.  Priv do well here but Xtals, Birds and Fasc do not need any punishments.

That is my point - eraulli's suggestion has consequences that he may not have foreseen.  I'm sure there are more that I don't see.  30 to 40 ships builds will seriously hurt the Fasc, Birds, Liz, Xtals, etc.

Good point.  The high quitting and replacement rate here at Nu have been a serious problem for some time.  I now only play team games at Nu, not because I prefer that style of play, but because "normal" Nu games have such a high drop out and replacement rates that it becomes a battle to see who can fill the dropped races with their friends fastest instead of a battle for who is the best commander.  The battle is fought outside of the game instead of inside it.  At least with team games everyone can only have 2 allies and the drops don't radically change the game nearly as much.

I realize this is a very old thread, but if any of you are still subscribing to it, please go read my idea at this thread: http://planets.nu/discussion/new-idea-to-try-to-reduce-game-dropouts and read my comments about how I think this could be compatible with this great idea of advanced resignations.
