Destruction comes in many forms in the Echo Cluster and the Taurus War Championship match is no exception as the top commanders battle viciously through tactics, diplomacy and propaganda to achieve victory and become the Emperor of the Echo Cluster! For some... the pressure of command, or the realization of defeat can become too great. This turn saw a huge shift in the War as 3 races admitted defeat at the hands of their enemies and sacrificed their ships without warning!
Fleet Admiral Othrym, currently in a close second in the Taurus war with 75 planets (2 planets behind the leader
DungeonMaster) gave a detailed summary of the events up to this point. The highlights are summarized below:
The Beginning
At the beginning Klingon attacked Empire, Robot attacked Federation, Privateer attacked Rebel, Crystal and Lizard (i do not know who first, maybe even the Bird Men) attacked Bird Men. Peace in the realms of Colonies and Borg. (See this early map:
Early Taurus War Map)
Then many Empire probes cross the cluster. Web Mines appeared in Empire space to stop the attack of the Klingon at the moment when it looked like a win for the Klingon.
The war between the Robot and the Fed is a hard one. The same with the war between the Crystals/Lizards and the Bird Men as on the Bird Mens two frontiers appear LCC with Webmines. Fed is losing ships and planets. Protective webmines appear around first Klingon Planets. 3 MBR were caught and running out of fuel when the tried to leave the Klingon space. 2 MBR got free but one MBR got towed toward a starbase where a ship destroyed the MBR. Meanwhile a Borgic Cube also gets caught by Klingon webmines and run out of fuel. But the Borg managed to free his Cube.
The war between the Fed and Robots calms, as does the war between the Privateer and the Rebel. Then a Fed owned Biocide appears at the Robot border and there are rumors about Borgic Loki and Crystalline Gorbies and SSD under the control of the Lizards.
The build queue come to a stop as more and more starbases are build and the leaders in the PBP only build small ships.
Cries of treachery are heard through out the cluster!
The War Continues, the Fascists Surrender
The Borg manage to conquer one of the webmine protected Homezone planets of the Crystal. The colonies start to march toward the Borg, but suddenly a Annihilation under the command of the privateer apears and Colonies and Borg seal a temporary peace agreement. The colonial forces move north and suddenly some fireclouds are moved also in the north from the Federation/Robot border with some gravitonic help toward the Klingon space.
There is a huge outcry accross the cluster when there was an explosion with the special signatur of a Gorbie and a Rush at the contested planet between Borg and Crystal.
The Klingons begin to realize the desperate nature of their position and start to hand over the friendly codes of their ships to the Lizards, Empire and Crystal. On turn 44, Emork of the Fascist Empire goes missing and the Fascist Empire is declared dead and adrift. The first casualty of the Taurus War.
Meanwhile, the Bird Men are close to their end as Lizard Thunder and SSD ships from the north and 2 Crystal Gorbies together with some Diamonds from the south approach the Bird Mens homeworld. All covered by a mine war between Resolute laid Bird Men standard mines and LCC laid Webmines.
Suddenly 2 Crystal Gorbies and a Diamond are caught in an unexpected Privateer fuel trap at a Bird Men planet and 3 ships are robbed and captured!
Turn 46 - The Rift!
Then suddenly, after much emotional outcry a tremendous event has occurred as two major contenders in this match, the Colonies led by Commodore Veldan and the Crystals led by Rear-Admiral Bondservant have crash landed their ships! On the same turn, a huge number of the remaining Fascist ships appear to have changed hands, leading to a massive number of 87 ships either being built or changing hands on a single turn. Some races were surprised by nearly a full cycle of the build queue and only built a few ships. Others seems to have managed to build a ship at every base they have!
It appears that we now have 2 strong leaders in this game:
- The Cyborg (DungeonMaster) - 77 planets 18% military
- The Privateers (Othrym) - 75 planets 16% military
Still in it:
- The Robots (Skiv) - 61 planets 13% military
- The Lizards (DragonDejhi) - 54 planets 15% military
Down but not out:
- The Feds (Fruchtquake), The Rebels (Julius), The Birdmen (JKovalainen), The Evil Empire (Sants)
Surrendered, or surrendering:
- The Fascist (Emork), The Colonies (Veldan), The Crystals (Bondservant)
These commanders face incredible pressures. The biggest lesson we can take from the Championship matches is that to become Emperor of the Echo Cluster takes incredible strategy, tactics and cunning, but perhaps most importantly it takes an iron will and nerves of steel.
In the words of Fleet Admiral Othrym, "I know/believe that there are more agreements in this non alliance game [than any other] ... . Now I have a feeling about the politics and work of the intelligence services during the Cold War and maybe even now."
It is incredibly exciting as we see the two Championship matches unfold, who will become the first Emperor of the Echo Cluster!?
